Up (Disney/Pixar)

I went to see this tonight and it was absolutely fantastic. Not surprising since it is a Disney/Pixar movie. The story was so sweet and had consistent laughs through out. The beginning montage showing Ellie and Carl was one of the sweetest things I have ever seen in any movie. This is right up there (and may have surpassed) Toy Story as the best Disney/Pixar movie. Definitely go see it.

I agree with everything you said! We took our daughter to see it and we all loved it. The montage was really REALLY touching and the laughs were consistent (We about completely lost it when Alpha first showed up). Definitely go see this movie!

Just a fantastic movie! Good all the way around. Funny, Charming and heartfelt!

MUCH MUCH MUCH better than their last 2 lackluster releases Ratatouille in 2007 & WALL-E in 2008. Good to see they are back to making the kind of movies they used to make.

Saw it in 3D. This was the most adult-themed story Pixar's ever put on film. It's very bittersweet. I lost my wife recently, and I found myself in tears at several parts of this movie.

It has a LOT of heart. There aren't many movies I walk away impacted like I did leaving this one. I will definitely own it when it comes out on DVD.

I can only imagine how you felt during the opening scenes.

Very, very bittersweet.

I cried. Like a baby. Saw it on Saturday, which was D-Day, so I was thinking of my dad anyway and I saw a lot of him in Mr. Fredricksen. I hadn't heard that much snuffling in a theatre since "Old Yeller". (Thank Goodness this one had a happy ending.)

And I loved the fact that Russell was a little Asian kid.

Great movie. The entire family loved it....my wife and I may have enjoyed it more than the kids. Great storytelling!

They really did a great job on all the characters....especially Doug and the rest of the dogs.

Another good Pixar effort. Pixar just by far is the best at this type of movie. Though I have seen some other efforts closing the gap (Bolt for instance), Pixar still has not made a bad film.

Story
Probably the best overall story of all the Pixar films. However, at the same time I thought it was a bit too heavy handed for young kids. Deaths and the clear cut references to killing. This was clearly the most grown up theme of the Pixar films. Some will praise Pixar for that but Up will not go down as my favorite because of it. This was tipped too far towards the adults IMO.

What I loved about previous Pixar films is they manged to find a great balance (entertaining the kids and adults alike). Yes, the story was very heart warming and IMO great for adults. However, since I also have to rate this movie based on how my kids reacted. They had lots of questions and I could tell were a little bothered by the heavy handed themes during start of the movie.

So from purely an Adult perspective I liked it. However, my kids didn't get into it until after the house took off the ground. It was probably the most unbalance of the Pixar films IMO.

Humor
Here is the one part where I will differ from the masses. I thought this was the least humorous of all the Pixar films. I felt myself laughing less at this movie then any of their other efforts.

That's not to say this movie didn't have some classic Pixar humor. There were some parts that I thought were funny. However, like I said, IMO just not as funny. I think it directly related to the central theme of the movie.

3-D
For once Pixar was out done here. After seeing Aliens vs Monsters...they set the bar so high with use of 3-D in this one was slightly dissapointing. Aliens vs. Monsters did a much better job with things coming at you for instance. These moments were non-existant in the Pixar film. It was probably an artistic choice but like I said, Aliens Vs. Monsters did a much better job in that respect.

I will say though that the general use of the 3-D was fantastic in terms of providing depth to the movie and the scenery. Especially, when they first meat a couple of our animal characters, the scenery just popped out. Still a must to see this movie in 3-D if not for the gorgeous back drops in the movie.

Characters

This is still what Pixar does better then anybody. They always seem to come up with character that pull you in. Humans, Dogs, birds and a kid. It doesn't get more diverse then that. Previously, we have had more centralized themes (Toys, Ants, Fish, etc...). I thought they did a good job of mixing and matching characters more so then any other Pixar film.

Overall
I give this movie a 4 ouf of 5 stars. Again, was a good movie but not my favorite for the reasons mentioned above.

I did not see this in 3-D but from people I have heard have said good things. My big problem with 3-D is people always go to the same gimmicks, i.e. having things thrown at you. Maybe it is just me, but that type of gimmick just makes me dislike the movie. Just my 2 cents.

Totally agree. I don't think my 6 year old really started enjoying it until after the house took off. Not sure about the 4 year old...he was really focused on his Sour Patch Kids early on.

Once the house took off....the kids really got into it. By the end, I am pretty sure they had forgotten about what had gone on early in the film.

I too was thinking that this movie would probably be great for the adults and good to very good from a kids perspective.

True but there are also moments were they can do little things that make you feel like your "in" the scene. Those types of things were few and far between as well.

There were more 3D scenes in the previews than in the movie itself.

I did like the lessons in this movie...

Simple assaults can make you lose your home and get forced into an assisted living faciilty. Even if the assault was retaliation for harassment and property destruction.

Little kids can go missing with no police involvement and apparently the dad really, really not caring. And when he returns he still doesn't care to go to his badge ceremony.

An old man will get in less trouble when he kidnaps a child, steals a house, and kills another man and takes his stuff than he does when hitting a man who damaged his property.

The movie was very moving though.

3D is nothing but a fad--good 3D is done the way Pixar did it--after awhile, things just flying at you just isn't fun anymore, and in most instances, it sacrifices the story. (Look at Journey to the Center of the Earth, for example) Up's 3D gave it some depth but unlike the crap that was Aliens vs. Monsters, it didn't hurt the story.

The problems with AvM's 3D are the same problems that caused the first version of 3D to go away. It may look better, but that can only go so far.

I don't think it is a fad. I think most kids movies will use it since that is still one experience that cannot be recreated in a home theatre...yet.

3-D is not going anywhere. I think it was Dreamworks Animation that said they are only going to make 3D movies and Peter Jackson said he will only shoot in 3D from now on. Also there is significant efforts being put into 3D television. It is nowhere near ready but it is coming. If we can find a happy medium on how to shoot 3D movies/tv it could be great.

So other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

Disagree. The 3-D technology has come a long way since it's last go around. It's no longer a FAD IMO. They are going to bring this same technology home now. The new TV's are starting to trickle out that are 3D Ready (able to use the same polarized 3-D technology) to the home. The TV's are finally catching up. The old multi-color lense method will be phased out in favor of the new tech as soon as the install base of TV's (120Mhz or higher) is high enough. Polarized 3D is coming soon to a home theater near you.

In addition, 3-D the way Pixar did it was simple versus the way Monsters Vs. Aliens did it. Monsters Vs. Aliens was a fun movie. More fun IMO then UP. However, UP had a better story. It's all about balance and this was Pixar's first attempt. I don't think for one second that if Pixar had used better 3-D effects it would have detracted from the story. It's just a tool just like CGI is. Pixar is too smart to let a tool dictate story.

I really got the impression that this technology was new to Pixar. At any rate, I can almost guarantee Pixar will get better at the technology and I also bet it becomes more immersive in the hands of these guys once they get the hang of it. They brought CGI to a new level and I think they can do it with 3D. They are going to re-release the Toy Story films in 3D with new scenes (probably to take advantage of that tech). I doubt those scenes will ruin those movies. Plus I am looking forward to Toy Story 3 in 3D.
