First I got to say a great big old shout out to my boy Kent Sommers. First his blog is awesome. I check for it all the time and he puts info in it he hasnt made an article on yet or wont be writting an article on. Second, I emailed him last night about if he knew anything about Shipp and Milligan contracts because for the life of me I couldnt find the signing bonus they gave out and I didnt want to wait for my contact. What does he do this morning, he makes a blog with all of their contract info for them. The guy is awesome.

Anyways here is the info:

Shipp numbers

I just got the particulars on Marcel Shipp's three-year deal.

He received a $500,000 roster bonus, payable immediately. and he'll receive salaries of $1.75 million in each of the three seasons.

His cap figure for this year will be $2.25 million.

Roderick Hood

The Cardinals remain in serious negotiations for cornerback Roderick Hood, but they have some competition.

Cleveland wants him, too, and the Giants are sort of lurking.
Hood has an afternoon flight to New Orleans scheduled. He's open to canceling that if either the Browns or Cardinals make him an offer he can't refuse.

I finally tracked down the specifics on Hanik Milligan's three-year deal with the Cardinals.

He didn't get a signing bonus but he did get $100,000 roster bonus that's payable immediately. He'll make an additional $150,000 if he works out at the facility in the off-season and a salary of $600,000.

In 2008, his salary is $700,000 with a workout bonus of $100,000. In 2009, he'll make $850,000 in salary.

That's a pretty good deal for the Cardinals. Milligan is an excellent special teams player, although he didn't stand out in that role last year.

Also according to sirus radio this morning the Cards really wanted Kelly and they are heart broken they did not get him. And may be turning their full extra attention to Hood so another one of their UFA prospects dont leave especially when they dont like a lot of the UFAs on the market. Losing just one person on a short list hits harder then usual.

If it makes any difference, I think Kelly was really, really considering coming here. The only reason he stayed in Cincy was because Palmer was so committed to him and made a huge push, both with him and with the ownership. Word has it that Kelly only decided on the Bengals after yet another phone call from Carson late yesterday afternoon.

I thought Milligan had a good year on ST. Didn't he make a 1st or 2nd alternate to the probowl?

Hood is one of the guys I really want. With Rolle, Hood and Green at corner I would be pretty happy going into the Draft and not having to reach on a CB.

Thanks for posting this info ...

Nice to see a workout bonus for Milligan in the contract ...

Looks like Shipp got some decent $$$ ...

We really need to concentrate on signing Hood, make him a good offer .. then work on bringing in someone like Columbo ...

that is some good money for Shipp. Shows how they think of him. He will easily be the back-up IMO.

To me, the Cards then really dropped the ball with Kelly. If they would've given him an offer he couldn't refuse before they let him leave town then the Palmer phone call is a moot point. They waited around with a slightly higher offer(that's what it sounds like anyway) and let him go back to think about it and lost him. You'd think they'd learn that you don't let guys you really want to leave town.

Milligan did a great job, I watched him every ST play and he always either made the play or was the next guy to do it.

VERY happy to see him signed. ST's are an important part of winning games and often go over looked.

I agree...

If he is a guy that you think brings something more than just another player at his position brings then you do what it takes to get him.

Same goes for the draft, if there is a player out there you HAVE to have on your team, then you go get him. Trade, reach, over pay. Just get it done.

If Kelly was gunna bring alot to the table then we should have made it an offer he couldnt walk away from.

I posted this in a previous thread:
The way I see it is we need 6 players minimum out of FA.

Assuming we can sign the following guys which I would be happy with:

Roderick Hood CB
T. Holt S
Al Johnson C

I would like to see us get At Least one of each of the following positions to round out the FA period:

OLB
DE/DT
OT

The gravy would be signing another TE and/or RB if the price was right.

So far we have landed Al Johnson which I am very happy with. We MUST land Hood to help at CB. Plus we need one of the FS to sign. I'd be happy with either KK or Holt as they both could compete for the starting job and add depth.

Marcel Shipp is OK at RB.

It would have been nice to land Kelly. It didn't happen so we will have to look else where for depth at TE. Eric Johnson perhaps?

That leaves the following positions still in question:

LB
DE/DT
OT

We really haven't seen the Cards bring in anyone that could provide depth or compete for these positions. To me that is where my concerns are. There are still good options available:

DT - Ian Scott - He could be brought in and fit the Run Stuffer role.

LB - Kawika Mitchell

LB - Donnie Edwards

LB - Lavar Arrington

OT - Marc Colombo

I agree with everything you said.

But no Arrington.

I like Colombo but dont we have to give up a high draft pick if we sign him? If so, we need to find another option.

Colombo is unrestricted, so no we would not have to give anything up to sign him.

Kelly said he turned down much more lucrative contract offers. What else could the "cheap" Cardinals do?

For one, you don't know that the Cards offer was the more lucrative one. And two,if you get my point, is that if this is a guy you have targeted as a need, and he should have been, you don't let him leave in the first place. But the Cards are a model NFL franchise and who are we to question the way they do things.

I don't know, perhaps selling Kelly on the organization, coach, region and how it would benefit him to come here would be an option. Maybe finding out exactly what Kelly is looking for in a team and selling him on that. One day perhaps someone in the Cardinals organization will realize that there's more to getting deals done than offering the best money and crossing your fingers.

That's what I was thinking... at least it wasn't the money. Looks like Cards offered more than enough $$$.

I like Shipp and I am glad signed him to a contract but $2m is a lot of money for a backup RB. OT is our greatest need and we seem to have no activity in signing a free agent. If we start the season with Wells and Ross at the tackle positions with no depth behind them, I really don't know what to say.
