And the Eagles couldn't afford to keep Hugh Douglas.

Man, has their been another team in the modern era that was "cheaper" that had more success?

The Eagles could've kept both Trotter, Douglas, AND added a premier wide receiver with the money they've had available over the years.

Wow. This is surprising.

That will change once the Brunell/Portis deals are official on March 3 I would presume. They also made some cuts but I am still surprised like you they are that far under it.

Once the Bailey deal goes through, they'll clear an additional 6.8mil in cap space.

I can't remember any other year like this, since the cap started, that so many teams were so far under the cap. It doesn't look good for our ability to compete for free agents, at least on the surface. On our side though, we probably have the fewest free agents to resign or replace than anyone else in the NFL. The only one left is Barrett.

Like I said in the other post, they will actually get to around 18mil in free space when the Bailey-Portis deal happens. Bailey counts against their cap right now because he's tagged. Portis' salary is minimal. They'll have to redo Portis' deal before the season starts though.

Are you sure if the new Portis deal affects this at all?

I think they just spent a lot of that cleared up space to sign Portis. He's going to get an eight-year deal that is worth $50.5 million and includes $17 million in combined signing and option bonuses.

Nice little payday for Portis

Even if the deal is a "straight" cap deal, you're looking at a cap figure of 6.3mil per year. That means Washington will still clear a little space with Bailey leaving, making their cap space 12.26 mil. More likely, Portis' cap number will be far less than 6.3mil because of the option bonuses, etc., meaning they'll have more in the 15mil range for cap space.

That said, we can't worry about Washington. Mike Bidwill said he wanted to outcompete Snyder for free agents, no reason that can't happen this year.

The numbers are a great starting-off point but are misleading in and of themselves. What's missing here are the numbers of players for each team that they want to hang onto, and what the going value for those players is.

For example, the Cardinals have few if any additional players they have to sign. This would mean that the Cardinals would have the entire cap overage less rookie pool to spend on free agents. (Call it "Spendable Cap Surplus").

On the other hand, a team like the Saints, Eagles or Ravens might conceivably have several players still unsigned that they plan to hang onto, and you have to subtract that out to determine what their actual "spendable cap money" really is.

Ideally there should be a chart listing (a) team, (b) cap dollars, (c) cap dollars after the rookie pool is taken out and (d) their top unsigned players and what their estimated cap worth in each instance figures to be.

In this way we could figure out where other teams are vulnerable and where we have a competitive edge signing guys.

Anyone want to take on that exercise?

Uh Wash is only approx 16 mill behind Phi and they have been signing top notch FAs year after year after year. Two years ago they signed Trotter and Armstead and host of other FAs. Last year
2 probowl level Gs and a probowl WR and great K and KR and a good DE.

Every year they sign quality FAs and people say they will be in salary cap hell and they are never there. This year they are signing more quality big money players.

(2) The last 3 years the Vikings have had the most cap money in the NFL.

In 2002 they had over 15 million the second most in the NFL only recent expansion team HOU had more.

In 2003 they had the second most to the Cards. Over 25 million.

This year they finally made it to number one. Over 33 million.

The last 3 years we have had over 73 million dollars to spend. And all we have to show for it is one starter the mediocre Mixon.

Sickening.

I was just talking about the Vikes in context of what teams should not do if they want to win a SB. It can be applied to any team including the Cards.

Some excellent points Jeff.

I may see what I can do with it over the next day or two, if I can.

We feel your pain Vikey. Still, your team was competitive last year (except for the total collapse down the stretch of coarse).

I can help out a bit with the Bears FAs:

RFAs: Mike Gandy, Joe Tafoya and Bobbie Howard. I would assume the Bears would tender both Gandy and Tafoya and I would presume they would also tender Howard although I don't know if he really fits in at LB

UFAs: Corbin Lacina, Scott Sanderson, Keith Traylor, Dez White will not be pursued by CHI, IMO. Todd McMillon (CB) and Stanley Pritchett (FB) will probably be pursued but the Bears will not overpay for either. Chris Villareal is needed...desperately IMO...but I think the Bears will not try and outbid for him. They want him back at a reasonable price and my guess is the Cards and MIA for starters will bid like crazy for him.

So the Bears have $14.4 million under cap and I see them tendering 2 players and trying to re-sign 3 of their UFAs

Updated as of March 4th.

Things to remember this does not include any signings from March 3. It is an updated amount that inlcudes all pre-March 3rd cuts, all RFA tender amounts, and restructures up to March 3rd.

So this list includes things such as Manning signing, but doesnt include any of the trades becuase they didnt become official until march 3rd. That is why you see that Washington, Houston, Oakland, and the bears still have so much money.

Also remember that teams have to keep enough for rookie pool and that Washington only has 2 draft picks so they can pretty much spend all of there money.

Minnesota Vikings $31.5 million under
Philadelphia Eagles $25.55 million under
Detroit Lions $17.51 million under
Chicago Bears $17.2 million under
New Orleans Saints $16.3 million under
Arizona Cardinals $15.8 million under
Houston Texans $14.12 million under
Miami Dolphins $12.9 million under
Dallas Cowboys $12.6 million under
Jacksonville Jag $12.54 million under
Wash Redskins $10.24 million under
Baltimore Ravens $9.74 million under
Denver Broncos $8.4 million under
Oakland Raiders $7.8 million under
Cincinnati Bengals $7.73 million under
San Diego Chargers $7.45 million under
Seattle Seahawks $6.94 million under
Buffalo Bills $6.87 million under
Indianapolis Colts $6.18 million under
Kansas City Chiefs $5.34 million under
TampaBay Bucc $5.22 million under
New York Jets $5.2 million under
New York Giants $4.3 million under
New England Patriots $3.6 million under
Atlanta Falcons $3.3 million under
St. Louis Rams $3.22 million under
Pittsburgh Steelers $2.43 million under
San Francisco 49ers $2.38 million under
Cleveland Browns $2.1 million under
Green Bay Packers $1.7 million under
Carolina Panthers $1.2 million under
Tennessee Titans $1.18 million under
