Yeah, I woke up at 4:30 to watch this...

Currently halftime, and were down by 4. 51-47.

Some points...

- The lack of ouside shooting has once again haunted this team. Stephon Marbury has been reduced to nothing.

- Dywane Wade is scared to take a jumper. He catches and immediately drives to the hoop.

- Allen Iverson is the only guy willing to shoot a jumper with confidence. Finally hit a 3 towards the end of the half.

- Marion has provided a nice spark off the bench. He's like a chameleon... just blends in no matter the team.

- Amare was HUGE off the bench. Definitely earned some "Brownie" points.

- This team would be in a world of hurt without Tim Duncan. This game solidifies that.

- Odom picked up 2 early quick fouls and sat most of the half.

- Marbury can't guard Shane Heal.

- Richard Jefferson continues to struggle on the offensive end. The coaching staff is really trying to get him going.

- All of the Australians can shoot, yet USA's defense effort is still not urgent.

- Australia lost to Greece by 22.

- New Zealand beat Serbia-Montenegro.

Marion's all over the floor. Running the break well!

Started the 2nd half, and has provided an amazing lift.

USA with their first lead.

IT ALL STARTS WITH D!

USA down by 2 after 3 quarters.

Brown takes out Marion. Inserts Jefferson with about 3:00 left in 3rd.

I SERIOUSLY doubt Marion needed a breather. What a boneheaded move by Larry Brown.

Amare didn't sniff the court in the 3rd.

2:00 left

Defense won this game in the 2nd half.

It wore AUS down, and the US just stomped on their throats.

FINAL

What can you say? If they play with the intensity they showed in the 2nd half, then they have a shot at the gold. Anything less, and they're going to be ridiculed.

LeBron and Marion displayed the spark.

What can you say. A great team effort defensively and moving the ball around. Tim Duncan is the leader of this team. I shudder to think where this team would be without him. He played the entire second half with three fouls and clearly was the stabilizing factor.

Wade, Lebron, Marion looked especially good. Richard Jefferson came off the bench in the second half behind Marion. I'm glad Larry Brown finally noticed how Shawn sparks this team. Now if he would only quit shooting 3's.

we should be blowing out the Aussies by 30 points.
Its amazing to see this team win games without consistantly hitting 3 pointers...in this game the U.S. shot 3 for 17 (18%) compared to 12 for 26 (46%) by the boys down under....

btw A.I. hit all 3 (3/5) of the teams 3 pt. field goals...

I can't be too proud of this result we were losing most of the game and Greece beat Australia by 20... Although overall I think the more games we play the better we'll get. I still think the best teams would beat us right now but hopefully we'll get a few easy ones for experience.

If I'm reading the box score correctly, the U.S. shot 36-51 from two-point range. That's 71%. Did Australia not play a zone, or did the U.S. finally figure out how to score against one?

Well I have bad memory and I only watched end of 3rd quarter on but Wade, Marion, James, Odom, etc kept getting steals and USA is great in open court and in the half court set - they were penetrating and/or passing well. James was making excellent passes, a few alley oop (sp) plays for USA towards end of game - USA went on a 10-0 run to start the 4th or at least around that time. James, Wade, Marion, and Duncan all played well. I'd like to go back and watch 2nd to see Amare to see how he did (could add him to list)...

Oops, forgot zone question. They did play some zone, USA did pretty good against it (I watched most of exhibition games but 1st Olympic game - my mom tapes them for me) but they played better than I've seen the Suns play against zone (not too many zones in exhibition games). So I can't tell compared to the 2 first games but had some alley oops (still can't spell) Marbury threw 1 to James  . Didn't shoot that great for game from 3PT though (looking at stats) - so there might be some concern still. Serbia lost again...

Austrailia played zone exclusively. Team USA played much better againist it. Guys like Marion, Amare, and Odom some easy buckets by finding the open spots in the middle. They got Duncan the ball by using taller players like Odom and Lebron to make entry passes. Team USA finally realized that athletically guys like Marion, Lebron, and Wade can make a living on the baseline againist the zone. All improvements, but tempered by the fact Austrailia played the zone pretty soft cause athletically and depthwise they had to.

The USA really wore down Australia at the end of the game. The defense was great in the 4th and Australia couldn't even get into their offense.

The team is learning and growing but they will have to get a better start defensively to beat the better teams.

Australia has a couple nice players but against a deeper team the USA team would have a harder time coming from behind.

USA still has real problem in the offensive half court. This team will have to make things happen on defense to get victories.

Marion and Amare both had nice games. Amare was a real spark in the 2nd qtr. Marion started the second half in place of Jefferson and the lineup looked much better. Jefferson just looks horrible right now, he needs a dose of confidence. Marion should continue to start in his place. Hopefully Jefferson can get out and run with the second team (James, Wade, Stoudemire) a little more. Anthony got a few minutes in the second half and 30sec to end the first, while the rest of the team is passing and moving better he continues to shoot quick shots.

They continue to improve but will have to get a much better start to beat Lithuania on Saturday.

Transition off the defense mostly. Stoudemire even had a couple of steals reaching around his player on the entry pass. After one he led a 2 on 2 break and threw an alley-oop to James.

Team USA still can't score in the zone very well. They seemed more energized on offense and did move the ball better in the second half (once the defense picked up). Shooting and shot selection was still suspect at times.

Exactly, they learned the weak spot of the Aussie zone and exploited it over and over again in the 2nd half (especially at the beginning of the 4th quarter).

Larry Brown seemed to FINALLY learn which players should get more playing time due to their effectiveness and them excepting their roles instead of just those that he thinks can play good defense. However in saying that if Richard Jefferson gets more than 5 minutes a game for the rest of the tourney, I'm going to kill Larry Brown. I really want to know what Brown's obsession with him is. He has absolutely no offensive game and he's not playing defense well either.

Marion and James were key to this win.

What they didn't mention here was that the USA caught up in the third when Marion started with Duncan, Odom, Marbury, and Iverson. Australia had a spurt to end the third. The US outscored them by 2 in the quarter.

Lithuania destroyed Greece today. US needs a good start defensively on Saturday. Todays game against Australia was worrying me in the first half.

U.S. turns up defense, turns back Australia
By J. Douglas Foster, NBCOlympics.com
POSTED: Thursday, August 19, 9:14 a.m.
UPDATED: Thursday, August 19, 5:42 p.m.

ATHENS -- It may have taken nearly three full games, but U.S. forward LeBron James thinks he has spotted momentum.

"I see it," James said. "I hope everybody else is seeing it too."

The first glimpse came in the fourth quarter Thursday, when the Americans -- who entered the quarter two points back of Australia -- went on a 10-0 run, propelling them to an 89-79 victory and a 2-1 record in the Olympics.

The key to the run, and in turn the victory, was obvious.

Defense.

For all the criticism and literary abuse Team USA has taken for its inability to make an open shot, its biggest mistake so far in these Games has been allowing too many open shots on the other end.

And unlike this collection of young, athletically gifted, high-flying Americans, most international teams are built around shooting ability. Give then an open look and they'll hit it.

Just as Australia did for three quarters.

The upset-minded Aussies (1-2) led by as many as 12 points in the first half, a result of its ability to make uncontested 3-pointers. The Americans continually either got caught up in screens or simply weren't there when Australia kicked the ball back out to a shooter.

As a result, Australia went 6-for-8 from 3-point range in the first quarter, building the lead to 31-29 before a Dwyane Wade basket in the closing moments of the first cut it to 10.

The lead reached 12 again in the second before a 12-6 U.S. run to close the period made it 51-47 Australia at the half.

Not much changed in the third as Australia took a 67-65 lead into the final 10 minutes.

But plenty changed in the fourth.

"We got out there and got stops," U.S. forward Shawn Marion said. "We were playing great defense, getting out in transition and creating easy baskets."

The Americans' shooting percentage in the fourth was directly related to their increased defensive intensity. The U.S. challenged 3-point shots, while at the same time limited inside space for Australia's big players.

The U.S. held Australia to just one basket for the first 5:20 of the fourth, while all seven baskets of the Americans' 14-2 run came inside, usually after getting out in transition after a defensive stop.

During the run, the Americans also got more players involved. While Tim Duncan once again led all players with 18 points, Marion came off the bench to score 16, six of those coming in the fourth. Wade was also big off the bench with 12, while James scored six of his eight points in the fourth.

"I try not to think about the negative when we get down," James said. "Our bench can give us a great spark, and that's what I try to do."

Allen Iverson scored 16 for the U.S. Shane Heal again led Australia with 17.

Game notes
The Americans also greatly limited their turnovers, committing just seven against Australia, a stark contrast from the 41 turnovers in their first two games (22 against Puerto Rico, 19 against Greece) ... Richard Jefferson was 1-for-3 from the field, and is now 4-for-26 (15.3 percent) from the field in the three Olympic games ... The U.S. has made 10 of its 62 attempts (16.1 percent) from 3-point range during the Games.

Thursday's other games

Argentina 82, China 57
Argentina forced China into 15 turnovers and neutralized 7-foot-5 center Yao Ming in an easy victory.

Yao, who scored 39 points just two days ago, was just 1-for-7 from the field in the first half. He finished with 15 points on 6-for-13 shooting. However, he wasn't able to control the glass as Argentina had a 40-29 rebounding advantage. Andres Nocioni had 17 points for Argentina, followed by Luis Scola's 15 and 14 from Emanuel Ginobili.

China is one of four teams in Group A with a 1-2 record and it finishes against two of the others -- Italy and reigning world champion Serbia-Montenegro. China must win at least one to advance to next week's quarterfinals, something it has done only once in seven previous Olympic appearances.

Puerto Rico 83, Angola 80
Puerto Rico had a tougher time with Angola than it did with the United States. Daniel Santiago blocked Carlos Almeida 3-point attempt as time expired to secure the victory for Puerto Rico (2-1).

Larry Ayuso led Puerto Rico with 17 points, while Antonio de Carvalho had 14 for Angola (0-3).

New Zealand 90, Serbia and Montenegro 87
The defending world champions fell to 1-2 with a close loss against New Zealand, sparked by a controversial call.

Down by one point in the final minute, New Zealand's Mark Dickel wrapped his arms around Milos Vujanic to draw the foul and stop the clock as Serbia and Montenegro inbounded the ball. But an offensive foul was called on Vujanic, and New Zealand scored on the resulting inbounds pass to go up by one.

Kirk Penney led New Zealand with 15 points.

Lithuania 98, Greece 76
Fresh off putting a scare in Team USA, host Greece was blown out by Lithuania, winners of the last three bronze medals.

Lithuania actually led 54-25 at the half, and pushed the lead well over 30 points several times in the second half before Greece outscored the Lithuanian reserves by 10 in the fourth.

Ramunas Siskauskas led Lithuania with 25 points to go with Saulius Stombergas' 22.

Spain 71, Italy 63
Jorge Garbajosa scored 17 points and Pau Gasol added 16 as Spain stayed perfect at 3-0.

The Italians actually led by four points entering the fourth quarter, thanks mostly to Alex Righetti's 18 points. But Spain outscored Italy 23-11 in the fourth on the way to victory.

Officiating is certainly another challenge.
