It has certainly been an eventful offseason for USC cornerback DeCarlos Nicholson. After appearing in all 13 games for the Trojans last year as a transfer from Mississippi State, the general assumption was that he was out of eligibility. However, a court's ruling in Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia's lawsuit against the NCAA that junior college seasons do not count towards an athlete's eligibility allowed Nicholson, who started his career at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, to play one more year.

In January, Nicholson announced that he would be entering the transfer portal for his final season of eligibility. Just one day later, however, Nicholson withdrew from the transfer portal and elected to return to USC in 2025.

The Trojans are certainly glad to have Nicholson back for 2025. Following Tuesday's practice, head coach Lincoln Riley discussed having the veteran defensive back around for another year.

"Glad that it worked out," Riley said of getting Nicholson back for 2025. "He brought a lot to our team last year . . . he made some big plays for us, but then also, just, he's got a great demeanor, vibe, kind of energy about him that's infectious.

"To get that back, and I think for him a chance to grow, you know, get a second year in the defense, continue to develop under Coach [D'Anton] Lynn and Coach [Doug] Belk and Coach [Trovon] Reed, it just made all the sense in the world. So it was a win-win."

With the majority of last season's contributors in the secondary gone, having Nicholson back will be crucial as the Trojans' defense looks to take another step forward under second-year defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn in 2025.
