I don't think his mother will be a problem really. There were a couple of good quotes from her as well when Amare was selected to the olympic team.

He wants "big, quick, strong, good hands, and athletic".
How about being able to shoot?

I can't really imagine they would take another combo guard int he draft. This suggests they are thinking about a PG through free agency or a trade.
