I'm concernd with VJ, I'm not sold on him and I'm not sold that he can produce a top 15 D.

But maybe he will change my mind next year. I understand that continuity is needed now, so we stay with VJ for another year.

The defense should have been a top 5 defense with all this talent...:-(
What talent? Only players who are worth mentioning is Buddha, Chandler Jones and PP21. Corey Peters is serviceable but needs help. No other pass rush but from front 3. Murphy is raw. The major problem with the defense is a lack of talent but VJ made some bad decisions in some games like the all out blitz against Garappolo on that last drive.

I was being sarcastic. Many were calling for VJ’s head apparently without taking this into consideration.

Many of you are on board with this, don't come crying when our defense looks the same next year..
Same as what? The first half of this year? Or the final 8 games?

Key to our defense next year will be improving play at both safeties and one of the two ILB's while maintaining level of play/depth at the other positions.

Odd man out might turn out to be Budda B. unless they create a role for him that doesn't screw up the overall defensive scheme.

I agree that he has to be on a short leash.
I totally agree. Switching DC's yr after yr sets us back. Our defense totally sucked this season. The last 3 games when he simplified the calls/assignments, it improved to middle of the pack stat wise. Middle of the pack for those last 3 games, not the season as a whole. This offseason, the personnel will change, hopefully for the better? Because of the lack of talent & shown improvement, plus continuity, they kept him. If we suck again next season, the definition of insanity will be keeping him in 2021. Yes, as you said, very short leash next season.

Bowles took over the worse defense in the league last year (ranked 32) and finished the season ranked 5.

VJ took the 18th ranked defense and ended up 23rd.
Wow, that's shocking. I wouldn't have thought the TB defense ended up 5th? Considering all the high scoring games they had. They were in a whole lot of 30-40 point shootouts. If our defense finished 23rd, I would think theirs would be in the teens at the very best? Not questioning your numbers, it's just surprising to me.

With Winston throwing 30 INTs I assume opposing offenses had a lot of short fields to work with to score all those points. Defensive rankings are based on yardage given up so that might have something to do with it.

Agree with Harry. Given the defensive personnel deficiencies, it's almost impossible to assess the defensive coordinator's performance. This team was lacking players at every level of the defense...the line, linebackers, and secondary were all short some pieces, which makes running a defense pretty tough.

I thought Joseph got the most out of his players, and they clearly played hard for him. He just didn't have the horses. I also have to believe that players respect him for getting rid of players or sitting players with bad attitudes or subpar performance, which he did.

Give him an inside linebacker, outside linebacker, and a defensive end next season, and let's see how he does. The secondary may have enough pieces with Alford's return and a the hopeful improvement from second year players.
I think this defense would've looked a lot better with Philon, Alford & PP (after his suspension) probably 2-3 more wins. Still not sold on VJ but I'm giving him the benefit of doubt considering the personnel he had to work with. We'll see what happens next season?

true. Didn't think of that. I bet their scoring defense was near the bottom then?

5th is misleading. Based on yards/game, they were 1st against the run & 29th against the pass.

Yeah, I was using DVOA, so I blame K9 for liking that stat. I normally reference that, but I was sloppy.

Yeah, another poster on here said they were 5th in total defense. Their scoring defense was one spot lower than ours.

Winston was a turnover machine (again). Short fields after turnovers make yardage allowed a poor indicator of defense quality. It's all about scoring defense.
