A source close to the Cavs told ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan that Cleveland plans to match the offer sheet, meaning Varajao should be back in a Cavs uniform toward the end of this week. ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported the offer sheet is worth $17.4 million, which would fit the Bobcats' mid-level salary cap exception. According to ESPN.com's Chad Ford, the offer sheet includes an opt-out clause after year two, meaning Varejao could become a free agent again in the summer of 2009. Varejao's agent, Dan Fegan, could not immediately be reached

Thus ends a lesson in how to not be an overhyped stubborn average basketball player.

demanding 6/52 and accepting 3/17 = ROFL

Varejao has a very high opinion of himself. He believes he will worth 10 millions a year soon. It would make sense he prefers a 3 year contract with an opt-out close over a 6 years contract.

Hell, if Doris ****** can get 9 mil per year then Varejao can get that too.

You have to wonder why Charlotte even bothered. First of all, would they even want Varejao? Second, did they really think that Cleveland would let him go at that price?

Not sure what their incentive is in all of this.

Well, there's always a small chance that Cleveland wouldn't match and Charlotte can use all the decent players they can get. Maybe Cleveland made a deal with them that if they gave Varejao a reasonable offer sheet then Cleveland would help out the Bobcats down the road somehow.

I'm pretty sure that would violate the CBA.

Not if it wasn't in writing (like the Joe Smith fiasco was). I'm sure teams make little verbal agreements like this all the time..... "You scratch my back, I'll scrath yours" kind of stuff.

RFA offers are always made based on the understanding they might be matched. Unless a team is despirate (ie the Hawks), they bid what they can afford and avoid overbiding.

As for Diaw, if everyone who demanded that the Suns sign Diaw for $50 over 5 accepted blame for overpaying Boris, this debate wouldn't come up because this was most of the board. I'll admit I thought $40 over 5 was closer to market but frankly saw no reason to extend even for that. Why extend unless there is a serious threat the price will go higher?

We can't argue about what you think you thought back then but we've established more than once that you didn't make those thoughts known in here during those debates. There were people in here - not me, I must admit - that were pointing out that Diaw had only looked worth much for one year so his value outside might not be as high as we thought. I was in the camp saying that he'd stepped up his game more and more as we progressed through the playoffs so I didn't think 5/50 was outrageous - though I did say he'd probably agree to 5/45 as things dragged on.

In a van...down by the river.
My thought was that Cleveland might let him go to position themselves to possibly bring in Jason Kidd. Just a rumor but Cleveland needs to make some kind of move in order to keep their King James happy.

I did voice reservations, but I'll admit I did not push hard enough. Considering how I often I get attacked for uncontroversial ideas, I was pretty low key - apparently too low key. I was not wildly upset when they signed him, but I felt it unnecessary.

The nature of the debate was whether the Sarver should be slammed if they did not extend Boris. I did not focus so much on the amount of money, but whether the Suns would be justified IF they held the line.

1. Boris would be an RFA and I doubted he would get a JJ type offer the Suns couldn't match.

2. There were only four teams with much money available below the cap and more than that number of attractive unrestricted free agents.

3. Boris was a player whose skill set was too closely related to playing for the Suns. How many other teams needed a 6'8" 230 pound center who is known mostly for his passing?

Since I was defending Sarver in advance of him declining to extend, I was taken off guard when they extended at more than I thought wise.

You know what, I believe you. But I don't see why we should discuss this over and over. The Suns did what they thought the best. None of us had and has the power to change this. We have to live with this player and hope he will one day go back to the level of a nightly triple-double threat or be traded.

I don't disagree. Boris has a lot of talent and I think we all hope he will find a way to bring it to the court.
