Winter Super Teams are on their way, but before we get there, we need help from our readers.
This year, our readers will help determine our players of the year in every sport.
Much like we did with the Male and Female Athletes of the Year, our readers will have a say in who our Players of the Year are. We've cut down the list of the best of the best into an even more elite group (no easy task). We limited each school to a maximum of one candidate.
Vote for our High School Boys Hockey Player of the Year. Reader votes will make up 25% of the tally, with Sports Editor Laurie Los Lee making up the rest of the vote.
Voting will conclude at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.
A four-year varsity player and two-year starter in net, Vane was named to the Catholic Central League All-Star and Mass State Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic teams. He was also voted Team MVP for finishing the year with a 1.67 GAA, .940 save percentage and 5 shutouts for the Spartans, who qualified for the Div. 3 playoffs and recorded 14 wins. “Carter gave us the chance to win every game,” said Bishop Stang head coach Ken Gouveia. “He never missed a day in four years with the team.”
With 43 points as a senior, Cruz finished his four-year varsity career with 146 points. He was instrumental in Dartmouth qualifying for the Div. 2 playoffs. “He really took on a leadership role this season,” said Dartmouth head coach Mark Rossi. “Beyond the points and accolades, I was most impressed with how his behavior changed his senior year as he set a high standard for his teammates and became a real leader on this team.”
Hockey: From goalie to defenseman to forward, the Vane brothers have Bishop Stang hockey covered
Hockey: In comeback from injury, senior forward gives ORR/Fairhaven a major boost in the playoffs
The junior goalie was a brick wall in net for the Bulldogs, who reached the Div. 4 Sweet 16 for the second straight year. The South Coast Conference All-Star finished the season with a .948 save percentage and a 1.98 GAA. Roy, a three-year starter in net, surpassed 2,000 career saves in a playoff win over Saint Bernard's.
