Could Bears Turn To Vick At QB?6th January, 2009 - 10:35 am

Chicago Sun-Times - Michael Vick is scheduled to be released from prison on July 20, and the Bears have made it clear that quarterback will be their highest priority this offseason.

Of course, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will have to reinstate Vick in order for him to return to the field this coming season.

Vick, 28, has always been a tremendous athlete, but there are doubts about what kind of condition he'll be in when he exits prison

Vick should be in tremendous shape when he gets out of prison.... What else is there for him to do other than work out?

...when the lights are on I mean... :p

Doesn't matter, it's not going to make him any less of a terrible QB or person.

The Bears are a very proud and moral organization. Remeber Tank Johnson? Organizations like the Cardinals and Bears who dont put up with crappy human beings on their team are what make the NFL great.

I'd bet anything he winds up with the Cowboys.

^Actually, cheap organizations like the Bears and Cards are what keep championships away. ;)

I still think Vick is better than about half the starting QBs in the league.

Surely you can put together a championship team without employing a bunch of criminals...

What?

I didnt say he was a better human being..

But he is probably the most athletically gifted player to come out in a really long time.

If a team takes a gamble on a backup role.. Im sure he can beat out a current starter.

Athletically gifted? ABSOLUTELY!

A good QB? Thats highly debatable. No way in hell is he better than 16 current NFL starters.

Sure he is.

Vick can give you 17-20 passing TDs..

And be a real weapon in the running game as well.

Here are some guys id take Vick over:

Edwards
Delhomme
Campbell
Garrard
Favre/whoever else the Jets have
Collins
Orton
Thighpen
Russell
Flacco
Ryan
Ovrolvsky
Frerrotte
Bulger
Fitzpatrick
Hill
Wallace
Schaub

Vick got lucky that the Wildcat offense became the "in" thing this season. Timing couldn't have been better for him. Relative to an NFL that only wants their QBs to sit in the pocket and pass, his value went through the roof. If guys like Pennington being flanked out are giving defenses a problem, imagine the bed wetting that will go on when Vick is out there. He was tailor made for those types of plays.

I wouldn't rule out teams that are "set" at QB, but might need another athlete on offense to effectively run different formations.

My jaw just hit the ground. You're smoking crack. These guys are going to be in the next wave of superstar QBs in the NFL.

I'll bet there is not a Falcons fan alive that would prefer Vick over Ryan.

Thats a pretty bold statement considering he has only averaged only 11 TD per season through his 6 seasons and well under 3000 yards passing. No way in hell I take him over the bolded guys from your list.

and how many 20TD seasons have the bolded guys put up?

Edwards? zip..

Campbell? None.

Garrard? zero.

Orton? You gussed it! zero.

Collins?

Schaub??

In his last three years, Vick was solidifying himself more as a passer, throwing for 14, 15, and 20 TDs before his arrest.

Can you imagine what he would be doing now with as good a WR as Roddy White has become? I guarantee you he would've done a hell of a lot more than Matt Ryan did.

and dont judge him solely on pass yards, youre forgetting hes the most mobile QB to ever play the game. Can any of the bolded guys offer you 1000 yds rushing?

Vick reached 17 passing TDs exactly once.

And be a real weapon in the running game as well.

Nobody is going to disagree with you on this.

Some of these guys aren't even starters... they're backups who played this year because the starter went down.

Regardless, Flacco? Ryan? Delhomme? No. HELL no. I'd disagree with a lot of the other names, but these are just egregious.

What the problem with Vick boils down to is he's just terribly inaccurate. He's not as bad as a 54% completion percentage would suggest because of all the other things he does better than any other QB. But that's the elephant in the room. You just can't have an effective passing attack in today's NFL with a guy who misses that much.

No. What Vick did in those last three years was stay healthy so the totals looked better. His rates weren't changing much.

What a bloody coincidence that Roddy White bloomed the moment he started playing with a QB who could actually hit the broad side of a barn.

LOL, come on. Vick was an average-at-best QB who's been out of the league for 2 years. There were probably a few more I could have put in bold, but I'm trying to be as neutral as possible.

?

Or can you imagine how good Roddy White would become once he had a QB that could get him the ball?

I hope the Bears do sign him. Just when you thought their passing game couldn't get any worse, they go out and prove us wrong again. How would you like that training camp battle Orton vs. Vick vs. Grossman?  :barf: :help:

Vick is without a doubt the most over-rated QB in NFL histoy. This year is proof. A rookie QB took over and did a thousand times better than Vick ever did.

Now that i live in seattle ive had alot of time to watch senneca wallace and while his name doesnt have the star power vicks does, id take him 10 times out of 10 over vick.... 11 TDs 3ints and 1500 yards over 8 games... if he played the whole season.....yikes, you do the math.

Im pretty sure Vick has a playoff win and Matt Ryan doesn't.

Vick didn't have as good a running game as Ryans had, either.

Please just stop. This is borderline laughable. The league figured Vick out and his accuracy has always been terrible. Quarterbacks are supposed to you know - throw the ball. Thats never been Vicks strength.

I wouldn't take Vick - personality aside - over any of the three QBS we have...

IMO a year in the Canadian Football League would get him (Vick) back in football shape and probably get him a better contract if he does well. Would also take off some of the publicity pressure for whoever signs him.
