I am an expert on the JJ fiasco. The "JJ wanted to leave people" are giving the front office a huge pass.
Everyone's right about the 6/50 million Sarver wouldn't give JJ in 04, but the Suns also did some garbage the following year.
Following the 2005 draft, they sent out word to the rest of the league that would match ANY offer for Joe Johnson, so don't even bother with an offer. Cleveland was open in saying that if he wasn't restricted or believed that the Suns weren't going to match, they would have targeted him as their number one option instead of Larry Hughes.
That same summer, Michael Redd and Ray Allen got 90 million dollar extentions. Joe's financial advisor went on Bickley and MJ and explained that he and JJ went out around the valley looking at where JJ should invest his money from the new contract he was about to get from the Suns.
The Suns offered JJ 6/60 million. Sarver went on Gambo and Ash during the JJ fallout, and said he came to this number (the offer) by looking at what Steve Nash and Ginobili were making. Funny, considering those two are a couple of the most underpaid superstars in the league.
JJ wasn't getting any offers from other teams because of the word the Suns were saying and he felt he was being forced to accept their low-ball offer. This pissed him off royaly. Then Atlanta came along and gave him a 5/70 million dollar offer and a chance to play in the south. The Suns got wind and panicked. They offered JJ 6/75 million (still much less if you believe JJ will get more than a five million dollar offer at the end of his current deal). JJ told the Suns hewas going to accept Atlanta's offer and he didn't want them to match, but he told Marc Stein of ESPN that if they did match he would be professional and everything would be cool with him and the organization.
Bottom line: In 2004 Sarver screwed up royaly. In 2005, both sides were to blame, but the Suns still had every right to match but decided that it was too much money. Whats dispicable was the hate campaign they created for JJ.
