The Minnesota Vikings have addressed almost all of their pressing needs so far in free agency. However, they still need to sign a backup quarterback. After Sam Darnold signed with the Seattle Seahawks, the Vikings made an offer to Daniel Jones. But the former first-round pick signed with the Indianapolis Colts instead. Even Nick Mullens, the primary backup the past three seasons, signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After the Vikings announced they wouldn't be signing Aaron Rodgers, they set their sights on another veteran quarterback. According to FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz, the Vikings and Ryan Tannehill have discussed a potential deal.
Tannehill was taken with the eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Miami Dolphins. He spent seven seasons in Miami before being traded to the Tennessee Titans after the 2018 season. Tannehill started the final ten games of the 2019 season, helping the Titans to the AFC Championship Game, where they ultimately lost 35-24 to the Kansas City Chiefs. He would be voted to his only Pro Bowl after the season.
But the 36-year-old quarterback didn't sign with anyone in 2024. Now, he can re-enter the league and help mentor McCarthy. They are familiar with being first-round picks, and Tannehill offers some mobility that many of the other free agents don't. We'll see if the Vikings sign him soon or decide to wait until later in the summer to get a deal done.
