Lewis is the second highest paid player in the NBA right behind Bryant. No way you take that type of contract back. The Wiz have plenty of space for the next two years since they have top draft picks each year. They need Lewis just to make the min required.

You want to give $45 million over the next two years for a player on wrong side of his career, can only play one position, and couldn't beat out the 38-year-old starter in front of him?

Rashard Lewis is so done.

SirStefan32 explains my position pretty well. We have no easy outs here. As a franchise, we're staring at real problems and wasting a couple of years salary on a dead weight player (if it brings us a future asset) might be our best chance to whittle away at our problems.

But you are making my point for me right there.
What the hell are you going to do in those two years anyway? You're going to be a lottery team anyway. It's not like you're in a position to win a championship.

Since you are going to suck for about three or four years anyway, taking a crappy contract in order to get some young talent and draft picks is really not that big of a deal.

We still have others under contract if we blew up the team and just took picks then we would need to over pay but Lewis will not put butts in the seats. The Suns just missed the playoffs I think you over estimate how bad this team is.

I would not take Lewis with his current contract. Why would the Wiz give up on picks when they have player like Wall to build around.

No, I am fully aware of how horrible this team is. As the matter of fact, they are so horrible, that it doesn't matter who they acquire for the next couple of years. We are headed for 3-4 years of lottery. I am ok with taking a bad contract in return as long as we get young talent/ picks with it.

As to the Wizards giving up picks, I really don't know. If I were their GM, I would not give up a single pick.

I think you are focusing too much on Lewis in this argument. Lewis is just an example of a bad contract. My point (and AzStevenCal's, I believe) is that when you are as bad as Phoenix is right now, you can afford to take on a bad contract for a year or two while you are rebuilding AS LONG as you get some picks/ young talent in the deal.

just missed the playoffs... BY SIX GAMES. that's not just missing anything... that's not coming close to making the playoffs.

And before you pull the injury card countering that we lost Nash for four games and Frye for 7... EVERY one of the teams above us lost All-Stars (Memphis lost Rudy Gay for 30 games, NO lost David West for the last 18 games of the season and Portland was a MASH unit ALL season) as well and STILL finished 6 games better than us.

and next year, we're only going to be a year older.

I think you underestimate how bad this team is going to be this year... by a lot.

Amen, whatever mental gymnastics Bobby Sarver and the boys want to play, we're still on the outside looking in to make the playoffs, and trending downward with little hope in sight.

I can't speak for anyone else, but squeaking in for a 7-8 seed is not what I consider a successful year. Worse, another late lottery pick is the mostly likely outcome. WHEEE!

"Squeaking" in for a 7 or 8 seed with a bunch of young players is cool. Squeaking in with a bunch of old guys is just sad.

yup... we're firmly in Utah-Jazz-Land when they decided to ride Stockton and Malone to their deaths... but at least those guys had actually GOTTEN to two straight finals late in their career. Our Malone is gone and without him our Stockton has led us to the lotto twice in three years. yay.

the era's over... freaking end it already and let us move the frick on.

If the Suns have no interest in using Carter's contract why did they do this?

http://www.nba.com/suns/news/carter_contract_110623.html

So that they could pay him later rather than sooner.
That's probably the most likely reason. The deadline to buyout Carter has been moved from the end of this month to until the start of free agency period, which will be after the lockout. Until then, I don't believe teams will be allowed to make any trades, so the Suns won't actually gain any extra time to trade Carter. So essentially if he doesn't get traded by July 1st, the Suns won't be able to trade him regardless of the new deadline.
What's in it for VC?
That's a good question. Perhaps it's something small, like less taxes to pay, or some other minor incentive. I don't really think it makes that much difference to him either way.

For the Suns however, they'd have to cut him a check for $4M in the next few days under the old deadline. Now they have a little more time to come up with the money.

It gives them more time explore trade options

BALDERDASH! it just gives them more time to collect interest on money sitting in Sarver's bank.

there can be no other reason for them doing this IMO... yup... that's how cynical I am about this team.

Or time to review this forum to understand what they can actually do with his contract since the Suns FO probably doesn't. :D
