Was at a wine tasting a few nights ago -- small group of us sampling cabernet sauvignons from France (2), Napa, Australia, and Chile, and someone brought a Vinturi Wine Aerator.
Now, I've learned to swirl my wine for awhile in the glass, and yada yada... but I was skeptical how much difference adequate breathing time really made. No more. The difference in the balance, roundness, whatever you want to call it, was immediate, and in every case very positive. On the cheaper wine, it smoothed out the awkward notes just a bit and softened the more astringent tannins; on the really expensive wines, it opened them up and made them... more more.
You pour wine through this little device, it gurgles and fizzes, and there you have it. I gather you have to be a little careful not to pour too fast or slow, but otherwise, couldn't be simpler. At $30-40 a pop, seemed steep, so I've decided to buy a half-price knock off that gets equally good reviews ('Magic Decanter') and looks identical, right down to the design flaws. I figure if it makes a $10 wine taste like a $15-$20 wine, it pays for itself in just 3-4 bottles. ;-)
