Was at a wine tasting a few nights ago -- small group of us sampling cabernet sauvignons from France (2), Napa, Australia, and Chile, and someone brought a Vinturi Wine Aerator.

Now, I've learned to swirl my wine for awhile in the glass, and yada yada... but I was skeptical how much difference adequate breathing time really made. No more. The difference in the balance, roundness, whatever you want to call it, was immediate, and in every case very positive. On the cheaper wine, it smoothed out the awkward notes just a bit and softened the more astringent tannins; on the really expensive wines, it opened them up and made them... more more.

You pour wine through this little device, it gurgles and fizzes, and there you have it. I gather you have to be a little careful not to pour too fast or slow, but otherwise, couldn't be simpler. At $30-40 a pop, seemed steep, so I've decided to buy a half-price knock off that gets equally good reviews ('Magic Decanter') and looks identical, right down to the design flaws. I figure if it makes a $10 wine taste like a $15-$20 wine, it pays for itself in just 3-4 bottles. ;-)

Vegas, baby, yeah!
You can usually buy a decanter and aerator all in one - so you pour directly from the bottle to the decanter thru the aerator, then remove the aerator when ready to serve.

Of course - this product is better if you have a bunch of different wines you're tasting.

It really does make a big difference in the taste. Letting a harsh bottle mellow a few months or a year can also help out - a friend bought me some cheap junk wine (6 bottles of it) about a year and a half ago - I opened one, struggled my way through it, and proceeded to put the rest into the wine fridge where they were forgotten.

Opened one up at Christmas just to see if it was any better - after aerating and decanting for a bit - it was smooth, mellow, and a delight to drink.

I got one of these as a Christmas gift. It works great for me seeing as when I open a bottle of wine I'm ready to drink it then and there. Now I can.

odd, I thought I'd responded to this already. huh.

Anyways, I got these for my parents last year for xmas. They like them--say they really work. I've tried it myself while at their houses (divorced), but probably don't have a good enough palette to taste the difference...I thought I did, but it was subtle.

Well, at home, I just pour a glass or maybe two at a time, so decanting a whole bottle isn't what I want to do -- this will be ideal, though.

Serious question:

Would one of these help the Two Buck Chuck that all of my friends have cases of in their closets, because that stuff is un-drinkable and I'm tired of bringing my own to every birthday party and get together. %$&% Merlot.

LOL, I know a lot of people that like 2 buck Chuck.

I do think it would help. My wife and I were at a winery in Canada when we went to Detroit last year and it really was amazing the difference this thing made. Smoothed the wine out right away, we tasted the wine out of the bottle and then after being aerated (sp?) and it was much smoother after.
