Anyone have a headset yet?

I just bought one from Amazon for under 30 bucks, you just slide your phone into it. It arrives next week, Ill let you know how it is. Google play is loaded with VR content and I even googled if VR is available for certain types of cinema and it sure is, of course it is, they drive all technology.

I wont pass on much info about cinema though!

I do not but I am debating. It's a pretty expensive entry point. Even with the PS VR you would need the newer version of the PS4 or a newer PC that can handle the demands of VR. I am not going to waste my time on some of the cheaper solutions. I have tried Google Cardboard and Sumsung VR and was not impressed at all once gimmick of it war off and I realized how crappy it is to paste your eyes to a phone.

Each of the full blown solutions has it's own list of good and bad. For example I was considering the PS4 VR but I would have to upgrade my current PS4. Also, it only has a 100 degree field of view. My brother in law tried it and said after you see The Oculus Rift, Valve and HTC’s Vive the PS version seems really limited in terms of field of view. He said it really makes a huge difference and he wishes it had a minimum of 180 degree FOV.

It's just SOOO expensive. Plus at this point we don't even know which developers are truly going to support which platform. I mean they all say it but it's vaporware until we actually see stuff come out. It sort of feels like Blu-ray vs HD DVD all over again. Which platform will be supported the most?

To be honest, I am also intrigued by Microsoft's HoloLens.

I am reading that the playstation NEO isnt quite powerful enough for true VR either.

I just mean cheap stuff like the link I posted and the set I bought. $30, throw your phone in it. I assume it is gimmicky to a point right now but you didn't play any games or anything that were cool enough to try again later on? Seems that your experience with a cheap headset was fun for 30 minutes and then useless?

I have the Google Carboard version and tried the Samsung VR. The problem is, once you try real VR you are going to realize how crappy playing VR with your phone strapped to your head really is. For example, it works great for those 360 degree Youtube videos and similar apps. The problem is your phone lacks the processing power to replicate anything like the other solutions above. So, most of the stuff you are going to get are gimmicky roller coaster simulators or gimmicky games. At least that's how they all felt to me.

I guess it depends on your expectations. For example the Star Wars app leading up to the movie and the 360 videos are pretty cool on those cheaper solutions. Just don't expect a real VR experience using your phone.

cool, so basic meaningless fun that me and the kids will enjoy, thats all I wanted for $30 :)

Ill save real VR experiences for once the industry starts moving along for real.
