Soccer season has reached the state championship games in the Lone Star State, and track has reached the area round as the spring semester progresses.

Standouts from each sport are among this week's nominees for the Happy State Bank High School Athlete of the Week.

The Globe-News is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Saturday and can be submitted through email at [email protected], by messaging the Globe-News through its Facebook page or on Twitter @amarilloglobe.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible and can only be named Athlete of the Week one time per season, per sport, and athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.

The poll will close Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

This Week's Finalists​

  • Bryce Braden, Stratford boys track & field — Braden broke his own school record in the discus with a throw of 192 feet, six inches to win the event at the District 1-2A track meet.
  • Kyndal McClain, Randall girls soccer — McClain scored the contest's only goal in the Lady Raiders' state semifinal win against Aubrey, helping Randall reach its first state title match for the first time in program history.
  • Ty Purcell, Bushland boys track & field — Purcell earned gold medals in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay at the District 1-3A track meet.
  • Ava Rahlfs, Amarillo High girls track & field — Rahlfs placed first in the shot put at the District 3-5A track meet with a throw of 40 feet, eight inches, beating the second place finisher's throw by two feet. Rahlfs also placed third in discus.
  • Abdirisak Saidgurhan, Palo Duro boys track & field — Saidgurhan won three gold medals at the District 3-5A track meet in Lubbock, winning the 3,200-meter run, the 1,600-meter run and the 800-meter run.
  • Saphina Stanley, Tascosa girls track & field — Stanley won gold medals in the 400-meter dash and the long jump at the District 3-5A track meet in Lubbock, also placing second in the triple jump and the 100-meter dash.
