Oh, and speaking of RBs and fumbles, what's the over/under on AP's fumble rate if he were a Cardinal?
I'm guessing 200.
People haven't been giving Adrian Peterson much credit on fixing his fumbling problem. Last season his only fumble came in the second to last game of the year, I think he's finally learned how to keep the ball off the turf for the most part.

For Slaton, I hear his fumbling problem was a result of nerve damage and hopefully that's sorted out. He's most likely not going to command much salary-wise, so it'd be pretty easy to bring him in and see if he's anything more than a one year wonder.

Have no idea who the team has targeted, but it sounds like they have someone in mind, and I hope they get him. It will be an interesting few weeks. Can't wait for final cutdown.

Scanning the various depth charts around the league these are some of the players that might become available. I would be curious to know your thoughts about any of these players---and please add ones that you think might become available. I will bold my three favorites, with my top choice in Cardinal red..

RB

Kory Sheets, MIA
Bilal Powell, NYJ
Ben Tate, HOU
Steve Slaton, HOU
Derek Ward, HOU
Curtis Brinkley, SD
Philip Tanner, DAL
Andre Brown, NYG
Kahlil Bell, CHI
Chester Taylor, CHI
Mike Bell, DET
Dimitri Nance, GB
Tyrell Sutton, CAR
Vai Tua, SEA
Keith Toston, STL

While Chester Taylor (5-11, 213, 10, Toledo) is getting on in years, there's still some solid tread on his tires. He excels in the red zone as a runner and receiver and that's why I think he would be the right fit. I like keeping Alphonso Smith too, s a red zone specialist like Taylor would be great.

OLB/DE

Paul Kruger, BAL
Mike McAdoo, BAL* (signed yesterday---undrafted/supplementary draft)
Auston English, CLE
Chris Carter, PIT
Jesse Nading, HOU
Pierre Walters, KC
Antwan Barnes, SD
Mark Herzlich, NYG
Alex Hall, NYG
Dave Tolletson, NYG
Philip Hunt, PHI
Juqua Parker, PHI
Brad Jones, GB
D'Aundre Reed, MIN
Lawrence Sidbury, ATL
Chauncey Davis, ATL
Thomas Keiser, CAR
Jeff Charleston, NO

Philip Hunt (6-0, 248, 1, Houston) led the CFL in sacks last year and he is having a very good camp with the Eagles---but the Eagles are deep at OLB/DE---and if we could acquire Hunt or Darryl Tapp or Juqua Parker (one of them will be the odd man out)---that would be a boon.

S

Larry Asante, TB
DeAndre McDaniel, NO
Colin Jones, SF
Darian Stweart, STL
Mark LeGree, SEA
Akwasi Owusus-Ansuh, DAL
David Sims, NYG
DeJon Gomes, WASH
Josh Bullocks, OAK
Jerome Boud, OAK
Quinton Carter, DEN
Shiloh Keo, HOU
Troy Nolan, HOU
Jordan Babineaux, TEN
Myron Rolle, TEN
Raymond Ventrone, CLE
Robert Sands, CIN

Troy Nolan (6-2, 206, 3, Arizona St.) is the kind of physical safety that would thrive in Horton's system. He's on the bubble right now in Houston. I would be willing to make some sort of a trade for him.

I am not familiar enough with these guys to suggest anyone. I do think we definitely need a RB. These guys have the shortest NFL life span of any position. I think the average is 4 years. Most teams are now using two RB's on a regular basis which makes a lot of sense to me so we should not just sign a body but someone who can actually run the ball with authority. As we all know your running game sort of makes your passing game. If you cannot run you likely will have a marginal passing game. Warner and the great St Louis team was an exception but they used the passing game into the flat as a run.

My apologies to the Peterson family, that was pretty embarrassing on my part.

Ah well, coulda been worse. I could have accidentally compared an occupation that pays millions of dollars to an occupation that by definition pays nothing (and worse).

Even worse you could have embarrassed yourself by saying AP would have sucked behind our offensive line that helped TH and BW combine to gain over 1300 yards and rush for 15 TDs in one season.

Oh wait they had nine fumbles....nevermind.

EDIT: The Cards really seem to have a problem with fumbles. 150 over the last 5 seasons. 65 the last two seasons combined compared to the Steelers 43, the Ravens 41, the Bengals 45.... I wonder what the problem is?

(I feel like I have said that...)
If you'd like to know what he woulda looked like behind an AZ quality line, watch him this year.

Troy Nolan > Rashad Johnson :)

They're different. Nolan is closer to the thumper safety that is going out of style, while Johnson is more of a cover guy.

I know Nick Saban loved Johnson and said he was the smartest defender he's ever coached in college.

I have a really good idea of how he would have looked behind an Arizona quality line with Warner and Fitz and Boldin. 1500 yards 12 TDs would be a good ball park figure. And the Cards wouldn't have had to rely on all those goal line stands in the 4th quarter to win 31-27 after having been ahead 21-0, because they could have played ball control in the 2nd half with All Day.

A college coach will always market their players, and Nick Saban is a notorious liar lol.

I wouldn't necessarily say Nolan is a 'thumper safety'. Both Nolan and Johnson have been in the league for the same amount of time, however, Nolan has 3 interceptions as opposed to 1 Int for Johnson, and they both have 6 passes defended. I remember watching Nolan at ASU for a while, and he always had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Nolan is also taller (6'2") so he has a little more range for covering.

FWIW, heard on KTAR that RB Ryan Grant might be released by Green Bay.

He re-did his contract and is now considered to be pretty safe. I think Nance is the player they let go and I'd like to see us bring him in. He's not great but he gets the hard yards and we're short in that area.

KFFL says Slaton (Houston) will probably first be up for trade and then let go if nothing happens.

The problem is that he hasn't played at all in preseason due to a hamstring injury. I don't know how serious it is. That could be a problem on picking him up.

Nolan was on the field more than Rashad Johnson last season. Rashad played primarily in sub packages, while Nolan actually split time with Eugene Wilson.

Also, the Texans safeties were TERRIBLE last year, and according to Profootballfocus grades, Nolan and Eugene Wilson received a -17 grade at FS, while Johnson received a +4 grade, the only positive grade from any Cardinal DB. Take it for what it is, just a source of information, but the Texans were AWFUL in the secondary and Nolan wasn't good by any metric.

As for the comment about Saban: I know he wasn't exactly glowing on Carpenter when the Seahawks drafted him in the 1st round this year. Did you see his reaction? He looked absolutely shocked!

I would add Nolan to replace Ware/Abdullah though. At least Nolan can make some plays in the secondary, but I doubt the Texans cut him. He's a young enough player and he's made some positive plays.
