We have a pretty good roster. No one is saying that POwell and Gaston might not be good players, but the facts are that we have guys who are either more proven, have a more vital role, or are just better at what that player does. Powell is not better than any of the receivers we kept. Powell might not even be a better receiver than our starting running back. That being said, it still sucks to lose him because he has talent. Gaston looked ok, but not better than what we have seen from Dan Williams and Ta'amu. Also, with his size, Gaston was limited in where he could have a role. Sucks to lose him, but other players brought more value.

Yep. Good teams routinely cut 6th, 7th round picks. This is a good sign, that a promising young player isn't one of the top 53.

Arians and Keim have said they don't build the team with a certain number for each position. Looking at the roster, I don't know if that's quite true, but is Walt Powell better than the surplus of OLBs on this roster? I don't think so, especially considering that he is obviously not one of the top 5 wide receivers.

I heard keim said they received offers for our back up Wrs and 1 of them i was sure was powell.
End of day they got nothing
I know we need a back up tackle but everyone is better then sowell
I said we could cut an old injury prone like alexander cause we have players can play good in special teams as well
And we could cut taylor and put a rb in practice squad
Are u agree there is much value in powell compare to taylor or alexander right now

I never heard Powell's name mentioned in trade talks.

Apparently Sowell is better than Levi Brown, Nate Potter, and Max Starks.

Special teams were an issue without Alexander last year, and he has been a pro bowl contributer on teams in the past.

I can understand why the team would keep a former 5th round RB, who is 3rd on the depth chart, over a 6th round WR who would be 6th.

Well if Williams or Ta'amu go down, we will wish we had Gaston. I really wanted to keep him.

Also, there is no big trend that means anything. So what if we had some undrafted WR's have big camps in previous years, it doesn't mean anything. So holding to that is simply foolish.

It's like when Raiders fan think Schaub was going to be the next Jim Plunkett because they had Plunkett. Nothing in the NFL happens amongst a rookie player because of some pattern that came years before.

All players are their own selves.

There are also differences between Powell and what came before. Powell showed a lot of athleticism and quickness. Most of the guys on that list of camp phenoms were guys who got deep and caught some balls. Guys can do that and not have what it takes to be an every down WR. What Powell showed was not only does he have the potential to be an ELECTRIC returner, he had some pretty similar athleticism and moves and was probably 2nd on the Cards WR core to John Brown on that list. So if you like Brown, you would of liked Powell too. He was mini-Brown.

Powell, Floyd, and Brown could of been the future of the Cardinals WR core, and a dang good one. Powell has that sort of athleticism that makes people drool and he showed it in the preseason.

Remember folks all those phenoms were UDFA, not 6th round picks. Of course this is all still potential, and he may not end up doing anything. But these are the guys you want to keep. Poo-Pooing it is just sophistry. He may or may not make it on his own merits, yet to be determined, not because of what Lance Long or Stephen Williams once did.

That said, we kept the best guys for us in 2014. I can't blame Keim, if anything we should blame Dwash because his situation forced us to keep more linebackers then we should. Minter's injury didn't help. Carson making his case didn't help Powell out either. I saw Alexander as a possible cut, but it makes sense to keep him considering our LB situation.

I like Golden, he deserves to be kept on the PS, but I'd much rather have Powell. I like Golden's versatility. But Powell showed he was all that and quite a bit more athletically. What I do like is that we made sure one of the two got to the practice squad before we tried to get the next one through. So perhaps if Golden is taken, Powell isn't let go. At least we kept one, even if it was the poorer one.

We shouldn't get too upset though. This is a good sign when you have to cut quality players. We don't have that across all positions obviously. You don't want to bleed much talent, but this is a problem good teams have. We didn't simply make the wrong decision, we were cornered into this decision based on the talent and needs we have.

We got Kelly, which is going to help out more in 2014 then Gaston most likely. But Gaston has a good shot to show from 2015-2020 or so that he is the better long term player.

I had a feeling we'd cut both and both would be picked up. They were the two I was afraid of losing most, but overall I'm not mad or anything. The 2014 roster is primarily built for 2014, and because of that, and DWash/Minter/Dansby situations this was attempted and we lost. Who knows how reality will play out with their potential, but they have it, and thus were worth keeping if possible. It wasn't.

I agree Sowell and Taylor were also guys I expected to be cut, but I can see why they kept them. Taylor knows the system, is still young, cheap, and perhaps is still on the block waiting to see if we can pick up someone else. Sowell too, is a guy who performed last year. Horrible preseason, but a guy who started for us last year.

Keim actually said on Doug and Wolf this morning that Carson beat out Powell for the last spot. He reiterated they'll keep the best players, not based on position.

I think its kind of nice to hear Cards fans complaining about losing a player thru waivers instead of everybody raising hell about how the Cards need to pick up every warm body who has a pulse. That shows you that quality has shown up in bigger numbers.Cards cuts are now being picked by other teams instead of vanishing into Arena ball or Canada.

+1. I was going to post the exact same thing. It's great to see our players be picked up by other teams vs looking at the scraps that other teams leave. This is progress people!
