Perhaps I'm missing something but Emmitt's final TD run scared the bejesus out of me.

Here we were with 2:00 minutes to go; 3rd and 9 with no Seattle time outs. If we pick up the first down, it's "knee time" and game-over.

If he scores the TD, Seattle gets the ball back 8 points down and about 1:53 left (an eternity by NFL standards) and we know all too bitterly what can happen when the other team is still within TD and 2-point range.

As Emmitt is crossing the first down marker, I'm yelling "Stop! Fall down. Bend down and tie your shoe. Run around and eat up time until someone touches you. Anything. Just don't score!

Emmitt scores. Remote bounces off far wall.

I guess that's how Cardinal fans think.

Was anyone else thinking the same thoughts?

What a fatalist are you. Even my wife thinks that you are well lets say "one Card short of a full deck" on this one. When you have a chance to score you score. Remember the Giant Philly game when Joe P fumbled the ball when the giants had the lead and lost???

Jeff,

A guy behind me said that out loud & I asked him if he was insane? (Then I remembered the 9'er loss) But I can say honestly the defense yesterday stepped up BIG! There was a whole lotta fire under that unit! Adrian Wilson, Russell Davis get my game balls! :D

I worry no matter what the score, but to telkl you the truth I was extatic when he scored and then worried that we were up by only 8! This team is going to end my life one of these days.

Glad it never crossed my mind. Smith was probably aching for every yard to try and get the record too.

I see Jeff's point clearly. We needed 4 knees, not try to down it and then run it in later. I see his point: down it at the 1 and 4 knees = 100% secure win. Score TD with 1:53 left and 8 point lead (not so secure, but chances are high). What are the odds fav's 1) screw up 4 knees or 2) screw up 8 point lead with 1:53 left. I'd take the 4 knees regardless of our defense. However, It was pretty cool stuffin' it in the endzone (kindof in your face type of thing).

for better or worse - Jeff I was right there with you - psyched when he broke for the first down, but hoping against hope he would fall down after. There's still too much of the Old Cardinal Fan inside of me. This defense is changing that - they are flat out SICK!!!!!

I LOVE THE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rediculous. Take the points. If he hadn't taken the points and we won by 1 point, people would be like "he should have scored on that play so we could have won by 8".

Jeff, you and I usually see eye to eye on most issues, but this is one I really disagree with you on. Any time you have a chance to put points on the board, you do so. It can only increase your chances of winning.

I have watched a lot of NFL football in my time and I do not recall one instance of a guy who has a TD in his grasp either running out of bounds or stopping short of his own free will no matter what the situation is.

I immediately thought they were a TD & 2pt conversion away from a tie but having that 7 was critical. So no Jeff I think you are the only Cards fan in the universe that thought of the fall down and Gator for 1:53.

:biglaugh: That is definately what I call Cardinal Logic! I do empathize with you Jeff, hence my handle - CardLogic... It has been what it takes to survive as a fan of the Cardinals.

The Cardinals (Denny) were obviously playing it conservatively. However, when the play opened up the way it did, scoring the TD was the absoulutely right thing to do! Play to win, vs. play to not lose... scoring that final TD pumps up your teams moral and demoralizes the opponent.

The times they are a changin'...

I agree. I've never seen in college, high school or pee wee league. I'd be disgusted if we won a game that way.

I disagree. You take any points you can get.

I remember a team last year that was playoff-bound. In the final game of the season, in the first quarter, they could have just kicked the easy field goal on fourth down. But no, they decided to go for it, and the ball was thrown out of bounds. That team lost by one point, 18-17, as the Arizona Cardinals knocked them, the Minnesota Vikings, out of the playoffs.

Always take the points. If you don't, it might come back and bite you in the butt.

The Cards beat the Seahawks. Play for 60 minutes right? The way Josh likes to fumble the ball, why give their defense any chances? LOL

Well not to bash McCown, but I'd rather give a RB the ball than to have him cough it up or throw another pick, gee whiz, man he ought to see whats coming up from behind him every now and then.

Never gave it a thought about NOT scoring..........however, after we did score I said, "oh boy, I hope we didn't score to soon!"
Kind of funny that there would be a situation to want to not score.

Wouldn't Emmit have had to take a shot in the back if he took a knee at the one? If he runs out of bounds the clock stops. Should we really expect him to do that. I think you take the TD and the points.

not really, he could have just fallen down like a defensive player who gets an interception, not a big deal either way though...

The fact that we were willing to run the ball on 3rd and 9 says to me that we were ready to accept a field goal and give them the ball back with only a 4 point lead....assuming that Rackers makes the attempt.

Even still... I was happy that Emmit scored; but, my first thought was that Seattle had enough time left to score again.

Glad we got the win.

Go Cards!!!
Your 100% correct... Running on a 3rd & 9 was a FG waiting to happen. I will take a lead of 8 over 4 anytime...

Did anyone else hear Wolfley talk about this on his show today? He said there is no way in the world any running back goes down in that situation. He also said that all coaches would want him to go down.

Smiths TD run.

how many time outs did Seattle have when Smith scored? If they were out of time outs then I would agree with Jeff that getting the first down without scoring ends the game without a doubt and would be a better choice.
