HOUSTON — It did not take long for Juan Soto to atone for his game-ending strikeout on Opening Day.
In his second at-bat in the second game of his Mets tenure, No. 22 went deep for his first home run with the team off Astros right-hander Hunter Brown on Friday night at Daikin Park.
After striking out looking in his first at-bat, Soto fell behind 1-2 against Brown, then elevated to tag a high 95.9 mph cutter off the ribbon board in right field 390 feet from home plate to give the Mets a 3-0 lead.
Soto admired his first shot with his new team a few steps out of the batter's box. The ball ricocheted back onto the field and was flipped back into the crowd by Astros rookie right fielder Cam Smith.
On Opening Day on Thursday, Soto stepped to the plate in the ninth inning as the potential go-ahead run with runners on the corners. He struck out at a 3-2 slider from Astros' closer Josh Hader, burying the Mets' comeback attempt. He finished 1-for-3 in his debut, with a single and two walks.
Last season, Soto finished with a career high 41 home runs as a member of the Yankees. He lit up Daikin Park during the 2019 World Series as a member of the Nationals, homering three times in the Astros' home ballpark in the series.
