You can’t keep him cold all day.
Missouri basketball senior and sharpshooter Caleb Grill beat the first-half buzzer to give Mizzou a five-point 39-34 lead over Mississippi State in a second-round matchup of the SEC Tournament on Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.
Missouri led for much of the first half, but Grill had not scored a single point. The 42.3% shooter from 3-point range this season had taken four attempts from behind the arc and missed them all.
No. 5 broke the brief slump.
The Tigers held on for the final shot of the first half, holding a two-point lead when Tony Perkins started to drive to the basket before kicking it out to Grill on the left wing.
The Tigers are the 7-seed in the SEC Tournament, attempting to break a slump that saw them lose three straight games to close the regular season.
No 10-seed Mississippi State beat 15-seed LSU 91-62 in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday night.
Before Grill’s triple sent Mizzou into the locker room with a healthier cushion, guard Tamar Bates and Perkins did a bulk of MU’s scoring with 12 and 8 points, respectively.
The Tigers have looked much more impressive defensively against MSU than in recent matchups, holding the Bulldogs to a 21.4% mark from 3-point range.
