For decades, players, coaches, fans and families have come together to cheer on Marshall University's "Thundering Herd." For this team and this community, Marshall football is more than just a sport, it's a way of life. But on a fateful night in 1970, while traveling back to Huntington after a game in North Carolina, 75 members of Marshall's football team and coaching staff were killed in a plane crash. As those left behind struggled to cope with the devastating loss of their loved ones, the grieving families found hope and strength in the leadership of Jack Lengyel, a young coach who was determined to rebuild Marshall's football program and in the process helped to heal a community.

My final three choices of a school actually came down to Penn State, Rider and Marshall.

Don't ask me why I chose Penn State.

I was at the Fiesta Bowl when Penn State defeated Miami for the title, just one day after being at the Rose Bowl where ASU defeated Michigan. That was an awesome 2 days!

Def want to see this movie.

Brian, will it get Oscar buzz?

I hope so.

Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox were really great as the coaches, Anthony Mackie turned in a great performance as Nate Ruffin, team captain, David Strathairn was great, like always, as the school's President, Ian McShane was incredible, and I loved Mike Pniewski as Bobby Bowden.

I say this looking back because while you're watching it you feel like you're there in West Virginia and not in the theater.

I hope a lot of people see this and it stays with them like it has my wife and I.

It's a great sports/life movie.

This is definitely on my "to see" list. Maybe this weekend.

Several theaters are showing it this weekend as a Sneak Preview. Check the paper, or the web, for times, but here's the closest to you, JG...

Harkins Arizona Mills.

Unfortunately, Brian, sports movies very rarely get any kind of Oscar recognition. Even the good ones.

I couldn't find a list relating to sports movies/Oscars, so I picked out 10 films...

10 sports films = 48 nominations, 14 wins (incl 3 for Best Picture)

Chariots of Fire 7 noms, 4 wins (incl BP)
Rocky 10 noms, 3 wins (incl BP)
Million Dollar Baby 7 noms, 4 wins (incl BP)
The Natural 4 noms
Jerry Maguire 5 noms, 1 win
The Longest Yard 1 nom
Hoosiers 2 noms
Field of Dreams 3 noms
Bang the Drum Slowly 1 nom
Raging Bull 8 noms, 2 wins

I think We Are Marshall could get some buzz.

I knew I liked you.. What part of PA?

Also, there's a pretty good deal at WalMart currently going on, if you buy "Return Of The Thundering Herd" on DVD, you get a free movie ticket to "We Are Marshall" inside.
