A pass rusher, Kearse would be huge when compared to the sack production of the past

A starting CB with shutdown ability, the free-agent list is loaded this year and the Cards have enough to not only sign Kearse but Winfield as well.

A experienced back-up for McCown and Parsons, it would have to be a guy capable of not only teaching but filling in just in case McCown gets hurt. Problem is a lot of these guys think they are starter material and might not like the idea. A QB in the mold of Detmer, who knows his place, would be good. Oh yeah, bring in Vinny? Might as well go after Troy Aikman... Vinny is old and don't let his early years fool you - he is not the QB at all of his productive past.

A veteran WR and dump the project which is Gilmore since it looks like Green will go WR in the draft round 1 to fill the need of a speedburner and Playmaker next to Boldin and Johnson, Northcutt from the Browns has been mentioned on the board and he shouldn't be too expensive and has Arizona ties to help that possibility. Northcutt would bring some veteran experience. Keep Poole and McAddley, Kasper is the odd guy out. There has to be a reason Kasper isn't starting in the NFL despite his ability.

Draft is deep in DTs and we have enough over and underachievers on the DL already to plug more in from free-agency. Draft a quality DT to play next to what I hope will be either an improved Bryant or Bell.

I will finish by saying that this seems what is needed, this team does have a lot of holes to become a playoff team but I'm looking at the goal as Green said... make the playoffs this year.

I'd say for sure the DE and CB cause I'm not sure of our ability to secure quality starters thru the draft for those positions.

If not a DE just a lineman who can get some frikkin push....tired of seein guys gettin friggin pancaked.

CB's who don't get toasted and who can hit would be nice.

The backup QB does not concern me....bunch of those around plus Josh will take all the snaps.

What we need is to "Close the deal!" I hated seeing Colvin and Holliday leave last year without even receiving a deal, not even a bad offer. I hope to see alot of changes in how we receive potential free agents. In this day and age, you need to "wine and dine" your FAs, may sound kinda like college recruiting, but that's what we're doing in regards to free agency.

Something I saw at espn.com
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1745230

The exerpt I liked was :

Bailey, a four-time Pro Bowler, was welcomed by Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, position coach David Gibbs, team captain Rod Smith and tackle George Foster, a former teammate at Georgia.

The TEAM CAPTAIN and former college teammate showed interest, I'm sure that went along way with Champ. I don't think these practices would hurt our FA chances at all. Take a proactive approach to the likes of Kearse, Winfield etc. show them you love their game, what you're willing to do in order to get them to play for us and above all else.....

Don't let them leave town without a contract offer!!!

first off I am looking forward to a very productive offseason...

I wouldnt even go after Kearse.. he is to injury prone and will demand a high price.. ( unless he is willing to sign an incentive laden contract with us.) I much rather spend wisely and get quaility starters .. I like R Smith (DT).. he will be very good and with Bell/Bryant improving with coaching.. Pace/King/Johnson will also improve more than peopl think.
Then go after Winfeild.. with him and starks, jackson, and Wilson roaming the backfield, we should do better on the defensive side..
Finally, go after a starting RG.. none of the guards we have can fill that spot adequatly..
If money premits it, I would also see us go after a barn burning KR/PR.. no need to take chances with Johnson and Quan returning kicks"stupid"...

I think Green and Graves with make a good impact this offseason and will drasctialy improve this team... I am still up in the air on who we should take with the #3 pick.. either Fitz, Williams, or Rothslinger.. ( its very hard to pass on a Franchise QB, and he will be one in 3-4 years )...

go cards....10-6 and playoffs in 2004

If I were GM...

My free agent priorities would look like this:

1A. Pure pass rusher DE: 1. Jevon Kearse 2. Bert Berry 3. James Hall

1B. At least one CB: 1. A. Winefield 2. A. Plummer 3. F. Bryant 4. M. Edwards

And then, at a MUCH lower priority:
2. OL: mostly just because this guy is a talent you can't ignore: 1. D. Woody

3. QB: Older, savvy vet. Maybe someone who gets cut in training camp

4. WR: Again, a training camp causualty

My draft would look like this (with wiggle room if someone falls to you that you can't pass up):
1. Ben Roethlisberger or Mike Williams
2. CB
3. C
4. DE
5. S
6. RB
7. DE

Denny's talking pass rusher, corner(s) and "an explosive RB" (what's with that?)

Depending on cap room, I'd target Kearse, Winfield and another corner (and forget about RB unless Denny knows something about one of the ones we've already got).

If we just solved those 3 problems, I'd be very happy going into the draft.

Ditto. A pass rusher and two CBs would be the ticket.

Green's made a couple of statments since he took over that lead me to believe he's not totally sold on the Shipp ship.
