Hell Id give the first pick. But lets assume it costs us a second.

Who the heck will we get in the second round that we know 100% has the skills of James?

What are the odds of drafting someone better? 5%? 2%?

Man James will change this franchise forever at this point with our other signings. Then we can concentrate on QB and CB.

Gte the QB of the future and a CB and we are guarenteed playoffs!

The guy is a stud. A workhorse who can catch, block, run outside and inside. "If" we can trade for James a lot of people will recognize us as the team on the rise. I'll give them our 2nd rounder and our 5th rounder and throw in Ray Thompson.

We are without a starting L-cornerback or nickel back, we are decidedly thin at O-guard and without a starting T-end... and you've QB of the future on your mind....

I agree. The only problem is the cost. You have to balance free agents with draft picks because draft selections are so much cheaper.

If we can get Edge for a reasonable cap hit, many problems would be solved -- meaning that a RB would be secured and the #8 pick would easily be directed at a CB.

Hey, I have no problem with E. James, but from a SI article last year the only place that James wants to go is Miami, which is his hometown. If we got James in a trade I just beleive that we would be renting him until his 1st opportunity when he would bolt . If he wants to come here fine, but if his desire to go to Miami is still paramount then we would be foolish to trade a long term solution in a pick for a short rental.

Nick Saban has said he has 0 interest in James.

What are the reasons that Saban has made that statement? I had not read or heard that and am just curious.

.... and Nick Saban is a smart football coach....

At a time when we are in delicate negotiations with Quan's agent on his future with the team... at a time when we still have some rather glaring needs at cornerback, O-guard, Tight-end.... at a time when we decided not to get into the bidding for the FA running backs available this year... We go "gaga" and throw millions upon millions at Edge.

I don't think so.

Edge doesn't necessarily want to play in Miami, he justs wants a long-term contract. He said on the Indy news he'd love to stay in Indy if they'd give him such a contract. Take that for what it is.

So RB isn't one of our "glaring needs"? To not seriously explore obtaining James would be beyond stupid. The man had over 1,500 yards rushing last season and a 4.6 yard avg.

His signing would be HUGE!!!

There are many ways of describing and using the term "HUGE" in this case.

As in HUGE salary - HUGE bonus... perhaps a HUGE headache trying to sign Quan... and ignoring some of our other needs is arguably a HUGE mistake.

This year is being described as a good to very good year for RBs in the draft.... So, why not invest in that possibility at HUGE savings.

If it came down to a decision between Quan's extension and Edge and I'd take Edge every day of the week. Sorry, but he's way more of a valuable football player.

??

Have you any idea what top 10 drafted players make? They make HUGE bonuses and HUGE salaries and they could be HUGE busts. Why not put the big money into a proven commodity.

Also, last I looked we have Q locked up for a few more years.

You gotta be careful. Edge is like buying a Corvette with a lot of miles. What is the life expectancy of a rb? I don't think it would be wise to give Edge a huge , long term deal.
In fact it might be better just to "rent" him for a year.
That being said, I believe if wwe were to get James we would catapult as the favorite to win the west.

Well, evidently you know.

So, tell me how much a no. 8 pick in this years draft would cost over 5 years (vs) the cost in bonus and salary to your "proven comodity"?

Wait a sec. Back up. What is a "proven comodity".

Are you really trying to suggest

a) James is not proven
or
b)Draft pick is guarenteed to be more proven than James.

Not really much point in discussing it farther when you do not understand that both a and b are wrong.

For the record, I don't think we should go after James.

But, I don think it's interesting that everyone is gung-ho on paying a MLB big bucks (when 2 weeks ago MLB wasn't even on our radar in FA), but a big price tag in a position where we all seem to agree we need a big-time player is what turns you off t James.

Insert the name "Hartwell" on half of these threads where you see "James" and that's how I feel. Heck, just say "Edge."
~We have other needs that will require money the money it would take to sign Edge
~I'd rather spend the money on Quan than on Edge

That said, don't think for a minute that I wouldn't wet my pants if he signed here. It sure would bolster the offense!

Kind of how I feel, he's a hell of a player, but there's some downsides to getting him that have to be considered before you do it.

If by the grace of God we could somehow nab Edgerrin James, then yes we set our sites on the QB of the future! We had so many positions that we were thin at, there is no way we can address them all in one offseason. This is a two year project on the road to the Super Bowl. I would rather draft a future franchise QB now and get him a year of experience under the tutelage of one of the best mentoring veteran QB's in the past few years. The other positions you mentioned lend themselves more to rookie success than the QB position. We can debate all we want though, ultimately Denny knows exactly what he is going to do.

There is no QB of the future in this draft. Next year should have some top talent but we might not be drafting that high if we get James. :D

I watched Smith play many games on TV and I watched him at the Fiesta Bowl. Put a little size on this kid and I think he has the tools to be a superstar.

You are right. No point in going further when you can't understand a simple query based on your expressed view.

At no point did I say or suggest that James is not a "proven commodity", nor suggest that a draft pick could possibly be a "more proven (commodity)", as you say.

I asked, based on your assertion: What the difference in cost would be between James and a RB taken at #8. I thought you might know given your strong views. Evidently... you don't.
