Who else thought Gaillard was BETTER than Cole?

I keyed in on him for about a dozen snaps and he played really well.
Yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing Gaillard in over Cole. I thought Cole would be great, but I was wrong. He’s expendible

I'll keep any guy on the cheap who can play the three interior positions, and Cole can.

Kirkpatrick aligns outside when he comes in, at least I am 90% sure that is where I saw him.

They targeted WR so little I only saw him a couple of times but one of those was a PI penalty where it looked like he was in the slot.

Impossible to say from watching live. I certainly thought he was solid.

Just for reference because they watched all the individual snaps Cole got a 62 PFF rating, Gaillard got 52. Make of that what you will. But certain I thought Gaillard did well against a good interior D line.

LOL 52. PFF is total junk.

This is why I don't trust PFF.

Anyone remember that game David Johnson had against the Eagles where he went for over 200? He got like an 80 for that game, even though he flat out dominated.

80 is really good, 90 dominant. In the article, all they could talk about is what he did wrong.

Arians first year, most of the team had low grades. I just think they have some biases built in.

Id rather follow a site like football outsiders that uses math to prove their point, not subjective analysis.

My only issue with math and football is that some things are just hard to evaluate with numbers in football. A perfect example is trying to grade an OL performance with math and equations. An OT for instance could have a terrible pass blocking day, but because his QB got the ball out very quickly or was able to elude the pass rush the numbers might say that he only gave up like 1 pressure and no sacks even though he got beat many times.

This doesn't even equate things like scheme and what that means for an individuals assignment on every play. Like when the C and G block 1 guy and let another guy through untouched. You would need to be able to determine which guy on the line missed the assignment of the guy that went in untouched.

The thing with PFF is they grade every play. So if DJ had 20 snaps where he was tasked with pass protection and fluffed them (as he tended to do) then that would effect is score. To PFF a snap is snap. You have a job to do. A 50 yard TD run isn't necessarily weighted any more than a failed pass pro block I believe.

Cool. Thanks for telling me stuff I already knew.

I liked PFF until I realized it was poo. And I won't back down from calling a turd a turd.

I remember their take a few years ago on Patrick Peterson when they downgraded him because opponents didn't throw the ball at him enough.

If you already knew it, why act like you don't know why it's possible to only get an 80 when you have a game like that?

The fact is, fans suck at assessing performance. We only see the highlights. We judge O linemen based on "did a defender get to the QB" and thats it.

There were 80 offensive snaps on Sunday and we judge Kirk only on the handful they targeted him and not the 75 he was drawing coverage or run blocking. Campbell had 60+ snaps and we all recall the 5 or 6 where he made plays, but have no idea what he did on the other 55.

Is PFF perfect? No. But it's a damn site better than any of us. I'll take 3 professional analysts watching and grading every single snap a player takes over fans watching live any day because frankly, we don't see 99% of whats happening in the game. We follow the ball.

There's also the fact that PFF is respected around the league. Many coaches and players have been through there and watched how they grade, come out the other side and said "Actually, they are right".

Do you remember Chip Kelly slagging off PFF when he was with the Eagles? After he finished in the NFL he visited PFF and spent a day with them watching how they grade. He was so impressed that not only did he change his mind he bought a stake.

Should fans live and die by PFF? No. But nobody has an issue with it except fans. Teams use their data from which player grades are based. Agents and players use their grades in contract negotiations. Players tweet about their grades when it suits them.

Fans just moan about it when they think a player had a good game and PFF says they didn't. But I'm willing to bet on PFF over any of us.

This is literally the same thing I once said, long before you arrived on this board.

Then I started reading Football Outsiders, and I was done with subjective analysis and started looking at objective analysis. You know...the kind of data that is supporter by actual math, not what an analyst thinks he knows.
