Weekend Rain Postpones Stadium Groundbreaking
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, March 17, 2003 12:29pm
Tempe, Arizona — Muddy conditions caused by weekend
rain have forced postponement of Tuesday’s ceremonial
groundbreaking for the new multipurpose stadium in
Glendale.
Groundbreaking has been rescheduled for Saturday, April
12 at a time to be determined.
“Mother Nature has reminded us why the new multipurpose
stadium will feature a retractable roof,” offers
Michael Bidwill, vice president and general counsel.
“We trust she’ll cooperate next month when our
community breaks ground on one of Arizona’s most
significant projects.”
Groundbreaking postponement will not delay the project.
Design work and site preparation -— preliminary work on
the construction trailer village, the 95th Avenue
alignment, and water and sanitary sewer lines —- will
continue. Excavation of the stadium bowl at the site
located at the Loop 101 and Bethany Home Road is
expected to begin in June.
Ted Ferris, president/CEO of the Tourism and Sports
Authority, adds, “We want to have a celebration for
fans and citizens and right now the site is simply too
muddy for any safe access, parking or staging. Moving
the date to April 12 allows us to let the site dry out
and to have families and citizens able to attend the
ceremony.”
