I hope they don't toy with him and have him go between the bullpen and rotation. He needs to be our #5, get Edgar out of the rotation and in the pen.

This however is a problem when Doug Davis comes back.
Webb, Haren, Owings, Johnson, Davis? Where's room for Max?

He will take over Pena's job when Lyon loses his closer spot.

Hopefully that won't be anytime soon. Lyon has looked a lot better lately and doesn't make me near as nervous as he did earlier in the season.

No one's losing their spot...Lyon, Qualls and Pena are all very, very good, late-inning relievers. We also have arguably the best rotation in the bigs when Davis comes back. I assume Scherzer will be slowly introduced to big-league pitching, taking over for Petit/Edgar when we need 2-3 innings of relief or for one of our top 4 relievers when they need a rest.

And judging by how durable Johnson is(haha), I'm sure he'll get the opportunity to start. He may take over for RJ or Davis in the future, but I have no problem with him in the bullpen early in his career.

Lyon has been money in his last 12 or so outings. No earned runs

could this mean the micah injury is worse than expected?
if not i agree, replace edgar with max until davis comes back, and then depending on how he did, put him in the bullpen and wait, unfortunately, for randy to go down.

Byrnes said Max will be coming out of the pen. If Edgar struggles, I could see Max getting a start.

That's a negative Ghost Rider, Scherzer is a reliever in the majors, they will not risk his confidence in the rotation

I think they're just going to use him as insurance in case something happens to one of our starters (i.e. Doug Davis' surgery, Micah Owings misses a start or two, Randy Johnson gets hurt, etc.). In the meantime, though, they'll probably just use him in the same fashion as Joba Chamberlain.

Does anyone know how bad Owings' injury is? Thanks.

According to the paper this morning, he's waking normally and may or may not miss his next start.

They may choose to hold him out because it comes the day after an off day, meaning the rest of the rotation would pitch on their normal schedules. Good break for us.

That's a great news. I hope he won't go back to preseason form from this minor injury.

Josh Byrnes on Scherzer, looks as if they still think he's a starter long term:
"He's responded. He's really done quite nicely. We've gotten him through the system in Double-A and in Triple-A and even in Spring Training. We're optimistic that he can be a quality Major League starter, and probably prefer that that's the focus at this point."

Hopefully Scherzer can make an immediate impact at the Major League level and take Petit's spot in the bullpen for now and maybe move up and be a starter soon in replace of Gonzalez.

I can't wait to see this kid in the rotation. If I had a guess (between E Gon starting to gag or a RJ injury) he will be in there around the All-Star break

Piecoro on Scherzer:

Scherzer looking like a starter

The questions about Max Scherzer’s future role have been a topic of conversation since before he was drafted, before the Diamondbacks gave him a guaranteed $4.3 million to sign last May.

And while the debate seemed to be ongoing even entering spring training, Scherzer’s performance in four starts with Triple-A Tucson seemed to help sway some in the organization who were uncertain.
General Manager Josh Byrnes touched on this last week, before Scherzer was called up.

“Yeah,” Byrnes said, when asked if Scherzer has given the club more reason to believe starting might be his long-term role.

“I think he’s really continued to make really positive strides. His secondary pitches are better and he’s showing a willingness to use them. Aside from all the things about his fastball that everyone likes, he really throws a lot of strikes and pitches ahead and has a plan. He doesn’t throw the ball over the middle of the plate a whole lot.”

And manager Bob Melvin touched on it this afternoon, saying that Scherzer has “come a long way.”

So while Scherzer might be pitching out of the bullpen at the moment, I wouldn’t expect it to last. Like Micah Owings, he will get a chance to show what he can do in the rotation.

And I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if that chance comes very soon. If Edgar Gonzalez struggles tonight – and as I type this, he has allowed two runs in the first inning – it wouldn’t shock me if they swap Scherzer and Gonzalez’s roles.

Looking back at Scherzer’s promotion, the “tired bullpen” thing sort of strikes me as convenient. They were probably looking for any possible reason to bring up Scherzer.

And I don’t think they’ll have him here just to be a long man in the bullpen.

Welcome to the rotation, Max Scherzer! Holy moley, can this kid pitch! No WAY they keep Edgar as a starter after this outing by Big Max. I'm gonna get me a Scherzer jersey.

How long before they pull the trigger? Are they gonna pull edgar from his next start or wait a bit?

It is just going to come down to what type of inning limit they want to have him on for the year. Kinda like the situation with Joba in NY, they are keeping him in the pen for the start of the year so he can start coming in and they won't have to worry about IP.

We all know he should replace Edgar, but does Melvin?

I started watching in the 3rd inning and saw Houston had scored six runs. I assumed Scherzer had started and got lit up. They I realized that Edgar started and that he came in in relief.

Kid was lights out!!! Can't wait so see more of him.

Did you guys catch his post game interview? He was nervous as heck, will be a stud (as if he already isn't).

Did they show Josh Byrne's face on those clips? Because at one point they panned over to him and he looked like the cat that ate the canary.
