“Premiere” Season Draft


Tonight the UFL held its inaugural “Premiere” Season Draft of the players who participated in the League’s recent workouts in Orlando and Las Vegas. Each team selected 24 players and now owns the rights to these players if they chose to play in the United Football League. The UFL has already begun contacting the players listed below and expect to announce signings over the next few weeks.

The remaining spots on each roster will be filled in July with players that coaches had previously identified and did not have to attend the UFL workouts and then again in mid-August with players that have been released by the NFL during training camp. This list may be subject to change based on further players evaluations or additional player availability.

This league should work well, where other start-up leagues failed, this one will surely thrive, I base this solely on our rock solid economy, and the fact that Denny Green is involved.

Not that it really matters b/c they'll be lucky to finish one season but if you were dreaming up a way to get a start-up football league off the ground, wouldn't you try to get it on the field during the summer?

What sense does it make to play on Thursday and Friday nights in the fall?

I agree that the USFL has a half-life of one season. But I think it will be an audition for the individual players to try to either get in or get back to the NFL

Even though the XFL bombed, Tommy Maddox was able to resurrect an NFL career that many thought was done.

What I find most interesting about the entire list is Las Vegas did not select a QB.

I watched Women's Rugby earlier this week. The Penn State/Stanford championship game. Fantastic stuff during the football lull.

Maybe us older guys were lucky there was no Title IX when we were in school. Those girls looked tough.

ESPN has Monday Night Football. NFL Network has Thurs/Sat night football, but this league won't really be competing with NFL Network, because UFL season is over (or almost over) when NFL Network begins their Thurs/Sat broadcasting.

The Thurs. football programming the UFL will be competing with, early in the season, should be ESPN's College Football.

If it is on network TV, I will watch it.

I actually think that a minor leagues for football is a good idea. There are probably decent players on practice squads waiting for an opportunity. There are probably decent QBs that could use a shot and could develop by getting game reps as opposed to just practice squad reps.

There are places where this could work, I think vegas is a good spot to have one of these team. I don't quite understand a New York team though.

I dont know if the league will fail or not, it all depends on how it is set up. If it is trying to compete with the NFL it will definitely fail...I think it would be more interesting if it supplemented the NFL and shied away from markets that already have teams.

The rumour is JP Losman will be QB there. Each team signed 20 players, then a further 24 were drafted to fill out the rosters...the things you read during offseason

Where are Todd Watkins, Leron McCoy and Matt Trannon? I am all for more pro football. There are plenty of guys who deserve a shot below the NFL level on a 100 yard field
