On Monday, the Washington Commanders hired former NFL wide receiver Wes Welker as a personnel analyst. In his new role, Welker will work with Washington's coaching staff as well as general manager Adam Peters and the front office. The move reunites Welker with his former college quarterback — offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury — and Peters. Welker was with Peters at three different stops before his hiring on Monday.

Welker will also reunite with newly acquired wide receiver Deebo Samuel. The Commanders traded for Samuel last month and guaranteed his 2025 salary, the final year of his current contract. Peters knows Samuel and believes he can have a huge season catching passes from Jayden Daniels.

The San Francisco 49ers hired Welker in 2019 as their wide receivers coach. That season, his special project was rookie second-round pick Deebo Samuel. While Welker was a different type of player than Samuel, neither are traditional dominant outside receivers. Welker made his living in the slot, as arguably the best slot receiver in NFL history. Samuel was built like a running back and played like one, too. He lined up everywhere for the 49ers. Unfortunately, injuries and offensive differences have led to a couple of down seasons for Samuel.

Welker and Samuel were close during the retired former receiver's three years in San Francisco. In three seasons with Welker as his position coach, Samuel tallied 167 receptions, 2,598 yards and 10 touchdowns. Samuel also rushed for 11 touchdowns during that time.

One topic that has followed Samuel since his NFL career began was his weight. According to Matt Barrows of The Athletic, during Welker's time in San Francisco, Welker helped Samuel maintain his weight training. The Commanders will never say this is why they hired Welker, but it doesn't hurt. Samuel is already motivated to play for another long-term deal. Having Welker around can help not only Samuel but also Washington. Peters and head coach Dan Quinn always seek a competitive edge to get the most out of their team and players. This is the latest example.

The Commanders believe playing for Kingsbury will benefit Samuel. Kingsbury is excellent at creating mismatches and putting his players in the best positions to succeed. Having an outstanding young quarterback is nice, too. The hiring of Welker to a staff role is the latest savvy move from the Commanders.
