CORAL GABLES — The Miami Hurricanes finished their spring practice slate with their spring game on Saturday, and their new transfer quarterback has yet to throw a pass.
Carson Beck, who arrived at UM after two seasons as Georgia’s starting quarterback, spent spring practice rehabbing his surgically repaired elbow, which he injured in UGA’s SEC title game win in December.
Fortunately for Beck and the Hurricanes, the quarterback is about to start throwing again, coach Mario Cristobal said. He will be ready to throw as early as Monday.
“The good part is as our … player-led practices come up, he’s going to be fully cleared for all of those,” Cristobal said Saturday. “He’ll have the opportunity to have about 16 of those before we even head into fall camp. So not to mention going on his own with the players.
Although he did not throw during UM’s spring practices, Beck earned praise from coaches and teammates for being mentally engaged during practice and putting in work analyzing film throughout spring camp.
“There’s a lot of opportunities coming up. He certainly took advantage of whatever he could, mentally. The physical part begins on Monday.”
In the meantime, Miami’s three expected backup quarterbacks — Emory Williams, Judd Anderson and Luke Nickel — got spring reps in Beck’s absence. The additional practice time has helped all three develop.
“Obviously, it’s invaluable,” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said in March. “Reps are the main thing. Those guys are getting ones, twos, threes … and they’re taking advantage of it. We’ve only had three practices, so we haven’t had a ton of reps, but it is crucial to their development, for sure.”
Beck was a star at Georgia, especially in 2023, which was his first season as a starter. In his first year as UGA’s starter, he had 3,941 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. He struggled at times last year, notching 3,485 yards with 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Beck has a 24-3 career record as a starter.
