What are the 10 moments(games, drafts, wins, losses)that define you as a Cards fan?

We Big Red fans are an unusual bunch. When you root for a team that has been transplanted 3 times in the last 45 years and have the record of ineptitude they have shown it is absolutely amazing that there are so many out there who have followed this club for a long, long time.

For me its been 25 years. Every once in a while my wife asks me why I still root for the Big Red. Why go through the emotional pain of losing when we have the Rams just 2 hours away and the Colts only 3 hours away. To be honest I can't give just one reason, but I have compiled 10 major events (both good and bad) that have defined me as a Cards fan. I would love to hear some others.

Here are my top 10 in order of least to most influential:

10. September 1997-Cards vs. Bengals in Cincinatti. Arizona leads 21-3 at halftime, in total control on the game and boom the Bungels score 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter and win. Was at the game. Cocky, laughing, getting beer poured on me for 3 quarters and then to have the Bengals come back and win. A loss that defines what is typical as a Big Red fan.

9. January 2, 1999-Cards vs. Cowboys. Arizona wins 20-7 to win first playoff game in 50 years. Between trying to help at my brothers wedding and wedding reception and sneaking into the bar to catch parts of the Cards win. Truly a great day!!!

8. Cards selection of Kelly Stouffer in round 1 of the 1987 draft. The first year I really got into the draft. I had messed around with the draft some but this was the first time that I had invested serious time into the draft. I had already penciled in Jerome Brown (DT from Miami) and the Cards take Stouffer instead. I had a bunch of buddies over (all Bears fans) who mocked me the entire day over the Stouffer selection.

7. 1984-Cardinals vs. Dallas. Roy Green goes crazy, gets close to 200 yards receiving and the Cards crush the Cowboys. The first time in my life as a Cards fan that I see a dominant Cardinals team. I have for years said that the 1984 St. Louis Cardinals were the best 9-7 , non playoff team ever.

6. December 21, 1998-Cards vs. New Orleans. My first and only time going to Sun Devil Stadium to see the Big Red. Suprised my wife, brother, and sister in law with a Christmas gift of plane tickets and Cards tickets. Got an awesome picture with Pat Tillman and saw the Cards win on a last second Chris Jacke field goal. The best moment was right after New Orleans scored to go ahead and seeing the look in Jake Plummer's eyes as he was getting ready to take the field. Say what you want about Plummer, but he was and is a gamer and that guy had the eye of the tiger that day.

5. July 1997-My first trip to Flagstaff. A little bit of football heaven. Had numerous fans ask me if I was Jake Plummer's older brother. Cool stuff.

4. October 1984-Steve Sabol (NFL Films) Halloween edition-"The Birds". It was an awesome 30 minute piece on the then 6-3 Cardinals. The Cards were on a 4 game win streak and were the talk of the league. I would pay huge bucks to anyone who had a copy of that show. OJ Anderson, Neil Lomax, Roy Green, Stump Mitchell all were interviewed. A great show for a great team!!

3. July 1987- My very first NFL training camp. Charleston, Illinois. Had a great conversation with Neil Lomax. Great memories. I remember seeing Niko Nogo behind the neck pressing 315 pounds in the Cards weight room. That was and still is the scariest looking man I have ever seen.

2. December 1984-Cards vs. Washington. Cards get royally screwed on a number of calls (a phantom pass interference call and a phantom roughing the passer call) and lose when Neil O'Donohoue misses on a last second field goal. Why a loss so high on my list? This was way before the internet and DIRECTV NFL Ticket and Cards games were hard to come by on TV. The Cards/Skins game was in the TV Guide as the game of the week. My dad and I watch the pre-game show, they go to the Cards/Skins game and just seconds before the kickoff they inexplicably go to the Bears/Lions game. The Cards/Skins game was for the division championship and the Bears/Lions game had absolutely no implications for the playoffs. My dad calls the TV station and they give some BS answer that too many Bears fans had called and comlained so they changed the program.

1. November 1979-PRO magazine headline article on OJ Anderson. That article turned me into a Cards fan. That crazy looking bird on Anderson's helmet just called to me and I was hooked. OJ was and still is my alltime favorite player. The armadillo was an awesome back!!!! Mike Singeltary said Anderson was the guy everyone feared going against. Just a great, great back who never got the credit he deserved until he was over the hill and playing for the Giants.

I really can't list them in importance or get the dates right but here it goes.

1) Neil O'Donahugh (?) running onto the field against the Redskins and barely missing it. Winner won the division and the loser didn't even make the playoffs.

2) O.J. Anderson in one of his first games of his rookie career (might have been the first game and against the Cowboys). First handoff deep behind the Cardinal's own 20 and gets stuffed. I say to myself this guy sucks. Next carry he busts it wide open and scores and I say to myself holy $hit this guy is good.

3) Every single game against the freaking fake America's team, the Cowboys. The three that come to mind are the Roy Green explosion for the win.

4) Rob Moore getting mugged in the endzone after an amazing comeback that faltered because of the no call flag in '98 against the Cowboys.

5) The playoff win against the Cowboys in '98. What a catch by Frank Sanders

6) It's sad but I'm still in '98, the kick against the Charger's to get us into the playoffs.

7) The year Lomax drove the Cardinals back from behind to beat the Niner's who had a large lead and Montana.

8) The drafting and short but killer career of Eric Swann as a Cardinal

9) Every move Terry Metcalf made on the opposition.

10) Emmitt Smith becoming a Cardinal. It is strange, beautiful and horrible all in one.

1) Final game of 1998. Cards in Playoffs. Beat Dallas.

2) First year in Phoenix, I believe. Cards winning. Playoff ticket noticees go out. Neil Lomax busts hip. Cards lose rest of games.

3) Comeback from 23-0 versus 49ers

4) Many Jake Plummer miraculous comebacks

5) Just as many, if not more, Jake Plummer bonehead plays.

6) Riding to and from game on bicycles in cold and rain with my dad.

7) Al Del Greco fake FG on MNF v. Dallas

8) Thought Johnny Johnson and Timm Rosenbaugh were going to be good.

Can't go on. Too painful from here.......

My favorite Metcalf moment is one I've been unable to confirm anywhere. There was one game, and I THINK it was a Monday night game (there was a time we were allowed on Monday nights) where Metcalf did something I've never seen before.

he returned a kickoff for a TD, they called it back on penalty, they re-kicked, and Metcalf brought THAT one back for a TD too. Can anybody confirm they saw this or did I imagine it as a child?

I also loved the game against Dallas where Metcalf had a 60+ TD run, and Dorsett had a 70+ TD run, even though he was a Cowboy that was a great run by Dorsett.

10.) packing up the car on a cold Sunday morning and driving with my Dad to Busch Stadium. wearing snow suits and drinking a thermos of hot chocolate as my Dad yelled and cheered.

9.) the really really really S L O W way they played the Cardinal loyalty song at Busch - capped off by an extremely high note at the end.

8.) Every Roy Green touchdown catch.

7.) chanting "BOOMER!" "BOOMER!" in '96 when Kent Graham got sacked for the one billionth time.

6.) that Monday night game in '99. I had a 10th row seat for Aeneas' hit on Young.

5.) of course, a 20-7 PLAYOFF WIN at Dallas. Still gives me goosebumps.

4.) Speaking of goosebumps, listening to Tom Dillon's Jacke field goal to beat San Deigo in '98 - he sounded like he was about to lose it.

3.) Being 4-2 in 2002 and tied for first place. What a great week that was! Then turning around and sticking both of our thumbs in our asses down 31-0 to the niners at HALFTIME.

2.) I think it was 1999 or 2000, but it was a sunday night game against (i think) the giants. we were playing like crushed cornholio and it got so bad that the 10,000 or so fans left in SDS started booing uncontrollably for like 2 or 3 minutes. the cards were so bad that it became overwhelming. i started laughing and couldn't believe that this was still my football team.

9. 1995- Buddy Ryan garuntee a victory against the Cowboys

8. 1995- My First Cardinals game...Aganinst the Browns. Cardinals lost 32-0

7. 1996- Bommer Eiason threw for 511 yards against the Redskins and the Cardinals won in overtime 37-34 i think

6. 1996- Cardinals vs Eagles Boomer hit Marcus Dowdell with about 20 seconds left to beat the Eagles at Home

5. 1998- Cardinals vs Cowboys We got Robbed!!! Nothing else to say!!

4. 1998- Cardinals vs Cowboys HAHAHAH We beat them in the playoffs!!

3. 2001- Cardinals vs Raiders One of the best Cardinals games i have ever seen in my whole life

Terry to this day is favorite all time NFL player, he was just so exciting to watch, even in a bad way. You never knew when he'd break off a long run, or fumble, but you knew he'd do something eventually.

Mel Gray on a crossing pattern against Dallas was pretty unforgettable too, I don't know how many times he took that pass in stride and scored against Dallas, seemed like at least once a game.

I also vividly remember Roy Green's 100+ KO return for a TD when he was still a DB wearing #25. I think they originally said it was 110 yards before changing the distance. The man was shot out of a cannon.

I only became a big Cards fan a few years ago, so I dont have too many moments and Cards memories.

Lets see...

-Cards beat Cowboys 9-6 in OT to move into a tie for the division lead with the 9ers at 4-2. They then proceed to get blown out in the first half in SF. They attempt a huge comeback but fall just short. The Cards' season spirals down as injuries plague team.

-Anquan Boldin. Superman. The Big Bang. Q.

-Dennis Green as HC.

-Cards get blown out two in a row by Cleveland and Pittsburgh.

-Cards lose heartbreakers in San Fran and Atlanta.

1. Cards announce move to AZ. I am home from college (in boston) on break. go to park 'n swap and buy the first unsanctioned cardinals sweatshirt (said "Arizona Cardinals," which, at the time was NOT the official name) and proudly wore it back to boston.

2. 5-3 cards v. eagles halftime score. 5-3, are you kidding me?

3. storming field after cards beat chargers to squeek into playoffs. sat on cards bench. took a piece of sod in a gatorade cup used by a player. took pictures with strangers.

4. lost grandpa at the game. no kidding. spent the rest of the night frantically looking for him w/ dad, brothers and cousin and uncle. finally received a call on my cell phone from my aunt and mom (grandpa's daughters) asking if we lost grandpa. he wandered to apache and rural. we were parked off mill.

5. constantly arguing with the old man that sat in front of us wearing cardinals boxers that he mistook for shorts. in the winter months we were blessed with maroon toughskins. he was nuts. he was pissed when i wanted the cards to go for it on 4th and goal with little time left in like the third or fourth last game of buddy's second season.

6. the day my bro's father-in-law snuck some cards-used sweatbands to us in our seats. we were like, "what the hell do we do with these sweaty things?" my bro's father-in-law is a special person.

7. the card's overtime victory over the eagles. first time i brought a girlfriend to a game w/ the fam. she couldn't beleive the histrionics that the shapiro men go through a game. at the end cheese was literally laying on the concrete floor between the benches b/c he couldn't watch the game he was in so much stress-induced agony.

8. the day an old lady turned to my dad, mid-game, a man who defines "reserved" and commented, "you have the foulest mouth of anyone i've ever met."

9. cheese and i, along with my roommate (also from 'zona) at a dive bar in la owned by these twins who gave up the practice of law in cleveland to come out and open a dive bar, watching the cards-eagles game on the smallest television right above the front door of the bar. it was the underthrown jake to martay jenkins td pass at the end of the game. both cheese, myself, and jim all collapsed on the floor in joy. everyone at the bar loved it 'cuz they had witnessed our pain in previous weeks. wow, a lot of these happened w/ the eagles . . .

10. the first time i argued with tango. if i can keep coming back to this board to open myself to being berated, i must truly love the cardinals.

Sure do, like it was yesterday. Former basketball player, looked like he verticaled 4 feet up in the air to make that catch over the defensive back.

Two of my most memorable plays were made by Jackie Smith. One was in the 60's when he split the safties deep and outran everybody on a 56 yard td catch.
That was the day I became a Cardinals fan.

The other was near the end of his career in the 70's. He caught a pass in the redzone and literally ran over half a dozen tacklers to score. He just refused to go down.

Still one of my all time favorite Cardinals. Great player.

1. 4th and 20 . . . 30 seconds left . . Cards up 13-6 against the Chargers . . . Craig Freaking Whelihan throws a 30 yard touchdown pass to tie it up. In total shock I turn to my brother (not Ouchie) who had collapsed in his seat and he looked up with tears in his eyes and muttered the saddest words I had ever heard up till that point: "I can't believe they're doing this to us." Looking over at Ouchie who's eyes are wider than his mouth during the infamous Christmas Day replay of Barkely going up for an Alley-oop againstt he Spurs where you can clearly see me in my SUNSMAN uniform (Basketball on head, Suns blanket as a Cape). I ran into the concourse and threw my favorite beige and black professional golf tour PING hat and stormed back to our seats. Metclaf takes the kickoff back and blood flows back from my enrgaed to face to the rest of my body. Jake runs off the field, points at Jacke as if to say "You better make this mother*****" - He hits it - the chant WE WANT DALLAS instantly erupts from my brothers and I and we storm the field.

2. GET THE CAKE! GET THE CAKE! PUT THE CAKE BACK! PUT THE CAKE BACK! January 2nd - playoff game versus Dallas - just flew home from two all-nighters with some of my law school boys in Chicago - barely made it out before a blizzard shut down O'Hare. My brother threw the Playoff party - all of my best friends were there . . . my Grandfather . . .my Dad and my best friend since birth and his father who had been going to games with us since that first night we skipped out on Passover back in 1988 to watch Al Del Greco running forward backward on a horrible fake field goal on Monday Night Football. They brought a Cardinal Cake from Safeway. The Cards score to make it 20-0 in the fourth and the celebration begins: Get the cake! Get the cake a room full of 30 people yelled and I ran to get it - by the time I got back in the room, the Cowboys scored and intantly everyone shouted - WITH ALL THE SERIOUSNESS IN THE WORLD - PUT THE CAKE BACK! PUT THE CAKE BACK! I literally walked backwards in rewind and put the cake back in the fridge. I would end up wearing it after the game and jumping into a frozen pool in the backyard.

3. 23-0 comeback - Lomax's last stand: The last game I ever got tow atch Neil Lomax - Cups raining down from the rafters - that says it all.

4. Garrison Hearst is drafted by the Cards: Caps off the best offseason up till that point: Steve Beurline, Gary Clark, Chuck Cecil and John Booty all signed in the offseason. One of my favorite all time moments in ESPN history as Theisman makes a total ass out of himself after we make out pick: "LOOK OUT WORLD - HERE COME THE CARDINALS!"

5. 25-22 OT Victory over the 'Boys - 1997: Running around the field - again after the 22-7 fourth quarter comeback led by Kent Graham after having blown the 21-3 lead to the Bengals the week earlier. Diana Ross' "What A Feeling" was blasting on the speakers and the words never resonnated as much with me as they did at that moment. Something like 18 lossesin a row to the 'Boys. Vince on the big screen afterward and I sat on the SDS grass wacthin' him talk about the Super Bowl. "We love ya Vince!" Still the best all around coach we had in between Stallings and DG.

6. 17-10 LOSS: "We finally have a professional football team." That's all I could say after THIS season's opening day loss to the Rams. No more 44-6 blowouts . . . no more going to Vegas and betting my life savings AGAINST us in order to make rent . . . no more just hoping for a close 1st half. No - I knew from the second this game started - DG had turned this franchise around. Have the wins come yet - no - but this team is FINALLY headed in the right direction and it was never more apparent in this game. Hard hitting, great tackling, producing turnovers and having a chance to win a raod game for the first time in three years.

7. Boomer to Marcus Dowdell: Unbelievable game Ouchie alluded to - although we didn't win in OT - This was a game where we surprised onside kicked in the thrid quarter and Philly actually caught it and ran it back for a touchdown against us - but Boomer's pass earsed all that - still could never figure out - why up 35-30 how we decided to kick the extra point rather than go for two - was one of the dumber moves I have ever seen.

8. Making Rent on the Cards: As some of you remember, last season as it became all too apparent that the Cardinals decided they would find new and unbelievable ways to embarass us in every road game possible - I made a big decision. I was dead broke - I had a little savings and was without a job and in the depths of a serious depression. Sundays were only going to make me feel worse - so what do I do - I turn the tables on Sunday and the Cards. In back to back away games against the NIners and the Seahawks - my roomates and I made the all-night drive to Vegas to get there by Sunday morning and then we laid the hosue againstt he Cards. By the time we got back to catch the beginning of the first quarter against the Niners after partaking in some pre-game party favors . . at the ten minute mark - it was 14-0. We laughed, high-fived and drank ourselves into an oblivion. The next game was a little hairer againstt he Hawks - especially after we went down 21-0 immediately and thought it would be another walk in the park . . .but Hasselback goes down, the Hawks basically close up shop and we barely hold on to another point spread victory and more cold hard cash in our pockets.

10. JUST WHEN YOU THINK THEY'RE OUT - THEY PULL YOU BACK IN! The last Niners game - an absolute killer in the short-term. Ouchie's going on and on about how different this team is and I'm agreeing with him until he says: "We won a road game!" I instantly corrected him and said "We're WINNING a road game". Then I got a call from a lukewarm Cards fan who was up in arms over how good they were and lahdeedah and I hung up on him. Way too much time left. They just couldn't get over that hump yet. I wanted it sooooo bad, but they just weren't ready to make that leap. That's alright - it'll happen (dear lord I hope - otherwise we are all doomed to be Cubs-like fans forever).

That's pretty much it.

Doesn't it seem like we have one of these every four months or so? Man - we need a game to talk about - BAD! GO CARDS! SHOCK THE WORLD THIS WEEKEND!

My worst Card's memory was getting blown out by the Dolphins, 55-something, on Thanksgiving Day I believe. I can still see Conrad Dobler in a rage on the sidelines that day, throwing his helmet along the bench. That game was the beginning of the end of the Coryell era. We never won consistently again after that game, even to this day.

I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and had a summer job as a teenager at this store in a strip mall. This was during the Coryell years. Tom Bank's uncle worked nearby and I had a chance to talk to him a couple of times about the Cardinals. He told me to watch the next time the Cards played the Cowboys. He said on the first offensive play of the game, the entire offensive line would just fire out and destroy Lee Roy Jordan. And sure enough, they would, everytime they played the Cowboys.

Five in no particular order:

1. Cards vs. Eagles 2002. I was at Maloney's in Tucson watching the game with one of my buddies. Right next to us was this John Gotti wannabe wifebeater-wearing Eagles fan who kept chanting the E-A-G-L-E-S nonsense more than the USC band plays that one song. Halfway through the game, a Miller Lite shows up with Cards gear, expecting the bar to be overflowing with fans of the home state team. He found two and we were rewarded with a bounty of Cards gear. The Cards come back even though Martay almost went out of bound for no apparent reason. The assclown Eagles fan got so pissed, both from the game and our E-A-G-L-E-S chants that we were mocking him with that he left the bar without paying and was beat up in the parking lot by the bouncers. Hilarious.

2. Vikings vs. Cardinals 2003. Although most cardinals fans wanted the team to lose, admittedly I did as well before the game. But once I got to my seats and saw the sea of purple the #1 pick did not seem as important as watching 50,000 pasty Midwesterners hit the bricks with their heads firmly up their collective ass. McCown to Poole happened and the result was a dogpile of six Cards fans, followed by multiple near brawls as we taunted a small city of people. I think we're also going to look at that game as the beginning of something good.

3. Chiefs vs. Cardinals 1994. Steve Bono with enough open field to run to Tucson. When the play started I got up, took a piss, had time to smoke a cigarette, and was back to see Bono cross the goal line. Only the Cardinals.

4. Cardinals vs. Cowboys 1998. An actual playoff victory. I remember Jamir Miller absolutely wrecking shop and the shock of Cowboys fans who though the day would never come. I'll also remember this game as it was soon followed by an absolute tailspin of bad football and personnel decisions that lasted until very recently.

5. Cardinals vs. Cowboys 2001. First game I ever got kicked out of. Was piss drunk, underage, and got into it after the game was in the last few seconds. The sheriffs knew I was hammered, confiscated my fake ID, yet instead of arresting me, told me to get lost and threw these trash Dallas fans in the drunk tank.

5a. Rams vs. Cardinals 2003. My first arrest due to the Cardinals. I was ticketed and cuffed for urinating in public in the parking lot after the game. Wouldn't have probably cuffed me except I was mouthing off (something about what the cop should do to himself with his nightstick). Charges eventually got thrown out of court when I completed a whole eight hours of community service.

10. Meaningless victories with a late field goal that WRECKED other team's playoff chances!
9.Jake the Snake. He was entertainingly worthless.
8.Marcell Shipp. I love how he runs...when he holds onto the football.
7.If you are gonna get on a bandwagon. Best to go on the ones with nobody in it. The ride is longer,cheaper, and WAY more interesting.

Two of my most memorable plays were made by Jackie Smith. One was in the 60's when he split the safties deep and outran everybody on a 56 yard td catch.
That was the day I became a Cardinals fan.

The other was near the end of his career in the 70's. He caught a pass in the redzone and literally ran over half a dozen tacklers to score. He just refused to go down.

Still one of my all time favorite Cardinals. Great player.

I remember that too, but what is odd is I most remember him dropping that pass in the endzone as a Dallas Cowboy

There was some Monday Night game where the Cards played the Giants and the score ended in like a 9-9 tie with about 8 missed field goals and I remember Howard Cosell remarking that it was the most boring sporting event in the history of the free world...

Yes, he came out of retirement to help the Cowboys go to the playoffs that year. In the last game of a fine career, a Super Bowl no less, he drops that pass that could have won the game for Dallas. I really felt sorry for the guy. Feel the same way about Bill Buckner, who was one of my favorite players when he played for the Dodgers and the Cubs. Another fine career overshadowed by one bad play.
