What book needs a quality big screen adaption?

What book have you read (obscure or mainstream, doesn't matter) that you think would be awesome on the big screen if done by the right people? If you can think of it, name your dream cast/crew.

Also, if a book was absolutely butchered for the bigscreen, which ones should be redone the right way?

Book I think would be excellent on the big screen in the hands of somebody who had a love for the book is "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. One of my alltime favorite books. I must've read it about thirty times in high school. Would have to be an epic but it could be done.

Runner up, "Bag of Bones" by Stephen King. One of my favorite books and one I actually hope to be able to adapt myself.

Also, "Point of Impact" by (can't think of author right now). Just a great action/espionage thriller with a wiseass redneck as the central protagonist.

I always said Lord of the Rings, and I can't believe they finally ended up doing it.

Now?....honestly, I'd love a REALLY good version of The Time Machine by HG Wells...that last rendition of it blew chunks.

Hmm, which almost makes me think that maybe a remake of The War of the Worlds....

Big King fan - but I think you may have known that. Anyhoo - check this out Bag of Bones.

Get to working on it quick I'd say.

I would love a big budget version of War and Peace--I just have a thing for big epic historical pictures.

Point of Impact, Stephen Hunter (I've read em all!) only it's bound to be ruined. They're thinking of making it a sequel to Tommy Lee Jones' The Hunted. UGH

"Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card.

Based upon Orson Scott Card's Hugo and Nebula Award-winning novel, Ender's Game takes a futuristic look at Earth just 40 years after the planet had staved off an alien invasion. In order to prepare for the next inevitable attack, prodigy children are recruited and trained by the military. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin emerged as earth's best hope to lead the next battle. However, he begins to question the morality of his cause.

As of May 2002, Wolfgang Petersen is attached to direct the film, which will combine the points of view of Ender's Game as well as of its companion novel Ender's Shadow.

Stephen King's novel Bag of Bones will become a horror film from MGM. The King story follows a middle-aged writer who moves to his lakeside cottage to investigate his wife's death. Upon arrival, he finds the place full of weird and scary happenings. Peter Care will direct from an adaptation by David Velos.

Based on the book, "Point of Impact" by Washington Post film critic Stephen Hunter, Shooter is the story about an expert sniper, who comes out of his self-imposed exile to stop an assasin, only to end up accused of murder. Tommy Lee Jones is attached to star in the lead role of the "sniper hero" which had attracted the attention of Keanu Reeves and Brad Pitt.

Jones was looking to film Shooter with director William Friedkin, but they choose to shoot The Hunted instead. Though completely unrelated, Shooter may well serve as the sequel to The Hunted.

I enjoyed "Enders Game" cool idea for a movie.

"Bag of Bones" sucked. Sorry, just my opinion but I've read almost every King book out there and he has really slided in his last few books.

Like I posted in the book thread "Replay" by Ken Grimwood is the best book out there. Supposedly there was a deal struck for a movie but nothing has come of it so far.

I know Salinger is a bit off-center but I think "Catcher In The Rye" would make an interesting movie if he could be convinced to sell the rigths to it.

Apparently the book started off as a play that he was writing because he wanted to act in it - then it became a novel.

Tommy Lee Jones would make a great Bob Swagger. I'm guessing Pitt/Reeves would want to play the FBI agent that works with him.

I agree that Tommy Lee Jones would make a good Bob Lee Swagger, but I don't like the idea of trying to tie this movie into The Hunted.

Jones was looking to film Shooter with director William Friedkin, but they choose to shoot The Hunted instead. Though completely unrelated, Shooter may well serve as the sequel to The Hunted.

All the books with Bob Lee are great. Stephen Hunter does a great job of going back and telling what happened years earlier as well.

Me thinks they should give another go at "Starship Troopers".

The first movie just sucks..

However Verhoven did redeem himself a little with the animated series...

I would like to see Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" as a movie.

I know the topic is somewhat dated, but the Muslim/oil scenario is not.

Starship Troopers is one of the few movies that really bothers me to this day - just the thought of what those giant insects did to the humans still gives me the occasional nightmare (let alone the totalitarian society on earth!!!)

I LOVED Aliens, and pretty much enjoyed Starship Troopers for what it was...just stupid, violent fun!

Aliens didn't bother me too much - other than on Aliens 2 when they find the "nursery" with all the colonists there, all implanted and nurturing baby aliens, and the one live colonist begs Ripley to kill her.

I do not know if comic books apply to this thread but I really wish they would do the Predator vs. Aliens movie.

That would be sweet!!!

I love the predator alien.... just a damn cool idea for a creature.

Hmmmm...Ray Bradbury doesn't get much love from hollywood. I heard a few years ago that Mel Gibson was going to make the one that takes place in the future and they have outlawed books and the main character is basically a fireman who burns books....don't remember the name....

Fahrenheit 451

Production starts in early 2004 on this film--written and directed by Frank Darabont, who did Green Mile, Majestic and Shawshank Redemption!!!

Any idea what is up with this?? I see that they have now pushed a possible release date to 2007.

This is one of my Top 3 books. Politically, be a perfect time to come out with it.

The Invisible Man by Wells would be an interesting adaptation. Especially if it's based during the period which the story occurs.

Divine Invasion by Phillip K. Dick would be another movie adaptation I would be interested in seeing. Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly, Paycheck, Minority Report are some examples of book to movie adaptation based on Dick's writings.
