Josh Allen didn't want to turn Buffalo's salary cap into Kill Bill: Volume 3.
The Bills quarterback signed a six-year, $330 million contract extension with an NFL-record $250 million guaranteed on March 9.
Allen's $55 million per year ties him for the second-highest annual salary in the league among quarterbacks with Cincinnati's Joe Burrow, Green Bay's Jordan Love and Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence. Dallas' Dak Prescott ranks first in average annual value at $60 million per season.
Could the 2024 NFL MVP have reaped a richer deal that would've surpassed $60 million per year?
"It didn't seem to my perspective I was taking a whole lot less," Allen said Wednesday in his first media availability since signing the contract. "They way I make sense of it, when you start getting these fairly big numbers throughout the entire league, it's weird to say this, but what's five (million) more going to do for my life that I can't already do right now?" I live a pretty good life. I've got a house, got a car.
"I wasn't looking to absolutely kill them at every chance I could. I told my agent that. I said, 'Hey if this has any impact on the cap let's figure out a way to not do that.' Both sides were willing to move and change different things. It was a pretty calm-mannered negotiation on both sides so it was good."
Allen also restructured his contract last year to convert a chunk into a signing bonus and provide Buffalo with salary-cap flexibility. Allen's cap number was decreased from $44.74 to $41.4 million in 2025 with the new extension, which keeps Allen with the Bills through 2030.
"I understood the impact of getting an extension done and creating some cap space. I've had a big contract before and it doesn't really change how I live and my life but this opens up some space for cap and to signing some free agents.I think we've had a pretty good free agent run so far."
Buffalo's top free agent signings are wide receiver Josh Palmer, edge rushers Joey Bosa and Michael Hoecht and defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. The Bills also gave $175 million worth of extensions to wide receiver Khalil Shakir (four, $53 million), linebacker Terrel Bernard (four years, $42 million) and edge rusher Greg Rousseau (four years, $80 million).
"Guys that are homegrown. Buffalo wants to reward their guys for playing good football. I've got a great relationship with our front office and coach McDermott," Allen said. "I can't thank the Pegulas enough for one, drafting me and allowing me to be the quarterback here but going out of their way. They probably didn't have to do it now. They could've waited. I do appreciate the fact they were willing to do this.
"It wasn't like we were going out of our way to get something done but I'm glad we found something we can both hang our hats on and put to the side now another four years."
