What could we get for Drew and/or Saunders?

With Bauer pitching the way he he's on the fast track for the big leagues and the only logical spot for him would be Saunders. Saunders won't be back next year nor will Drew, so we may as well cash in now. With the way we've been playing as of late and the new playoff wild card structure we may make a run, but I don't think the drop off from Drew to Bloomquist or Saunders to Bauer is great enough to warrant passing up on prospects that could be had for Saunders and Drew.

That being said, what would the market look like for these two, could we get a solid 3B back?

Saunders will have value among contending teams that need middle relief or a great need for a 5th starter. I suspect that market would be better at the trade deadline.

If healthy, Drew is a legitimate starting SS for a lot of teams. An every day, quality left-handed bat. But with Boras in the picture, teams wouldn't be able to look at him as a long-term acquisition. He'd be a 1/2 season rental. He's only attractive if he's under contract for a few years at a semi-reasonable rate.

Neither of those guys are going to bring home +++ prospects, but you can probably get tweener prospects other teams are ready to give up on ... basically players like Parra, Overbay, and others that already dot the roster. Trades like that, it's usually the "player to be named later" that ends up being a steal, like Jason Schmidt and David Ortiz. When it comes to trades involving multiple prospects, I always think catcher offers the best bargain, but the D-Backs are pretty set at that position after the draft. I'd love to see them grab a young, skinny shortstop they can turn into a power-hitting 3rd baseman.

If were able to inch our way back into contention I'd like to see us grab a solid 3b even if its a rent a player. I dont think we lose much going from drew to bloomquist or Saunders to bauer, but an upgrade at 3b may just be the impact we need.

Yeah, but who do you think is available? Youkillis is cooked and costs $14 mil a year. Maybe Chase Headley if the Pads will deal with another NL West team.

Greg Schulte said tonight that Drew is getting some time at 3B during his Minor League rehab.

Good! I have been hoping that he would take time away from Roberts at 3B rather than the Bloomquist/McDonald tandem at SS, which has been one of the best in baseball, both at bat and in the field. And I would think that playing 3B would cause less wear & tear on Drew's ankle than at SS.

We don't expect Drew to be back with us next season. It will give the D'backs time to take line up a productive 3B on a permanent basis. Send Bell back down for more seasoning and alternate Roberts and Drew at 3B for the rest of the season, giving Drew as many days off as he'll need.
