Same as a Chief Executive Officer does for any business. 'Builds a staff of strong, experienced leaders for each segment of the operation.
In the case of the D'backs, that would be Marketing and Advertising, TV and radio, Building and Facilities, Maintenance, Accounting . . . Minor League operations, Scouting . . . and, of course, the 'sport' side of the business -- a strong GM, an experienced Manager and diverse Coaching Staff . . . etc.
In addition to choosing key people, the CEO also sets the direction of the whole operation.
And if he, or she, does it well, you don't think about how important their role is. (Ahem, George Steinbrenner.)
