Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas teed off together at The Masters on Thursday morning in one of the featured broadcast groups alongside amateur Jose Luis Ballester. Which meant a lot of golf fans unfamiliar with the 21-year-old from Spain were getting their first look at the young talent as they watched two of the best in the world try to tame Augusta.

Because Ballester isn't a pro yet, he doesn't have the same sponsor obligations on the course and can wear a bit of his own gear. On Thursday that meant rocking a distinct cap with upside down lettering.

If you're wondering what it says, here's your answer: Sun Devils.

As in Arizona State Sun Devils, where Ballester is currently playing college golf — much like former Masters champion and fellow Spaniard Jon Rahm did. The hat appears to be part of the No Rivals collection.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Ballester will be in play to become the first amateur to win a green jacket. After qualifying for The Masters as the U.S. Amateur Champion. Ballester struggled out of the gate with a four-over par front nine featuring a birdie, two bogeys and a triple bogey.

That will be good news for a rather loud contingent of fans online who thought Ballester's fashion choice was as amateur as his status.

Masters fans weren't happy with the hat choice

I’m sure Jose Luis Ballester is a great player. And I’m all for the amateurs repping their schools, but someone probably should’ve told him to leave the upside down logo hat at home for The Masters. pic.twitter.com/EiqiiYaLHk

Jose Luis Ballester I don’t know who you are but you have already lost wearing this hat. Egregious. pic.twitter.com/QEPhe1irCa

“Kick him off the tour Doug!”

I have no idea who this amateur Jose Luis Ballester is playing with Scottie but this hat choice is egregious. If he slows Scottie down I will never forgive him#Masters

I might be an old head, but Jose Luis Ballester showing up to his first Masters with an upside down S˥IΛƎᗡ N∩S hat is insane behavior.

This hat choice by Jose Luis Ballester at #TheMasters is just outrageous

I know some local clubs that wouldn’t even allow this!#TheMasters2025pic.twitter.com/m9qJkg5R3b

Jose Luis Ballester wearing the upside down sun devils hat at Augusta is disgraceful

Diabolical! Who would make such a hat! https://t.co/4l02wSv6Nr

Well, maybe he'll get a sponsorship out of this after all.
