Any idea how many snaps they played during their game? Again 18 snaps. Small sample size. And if I remember right one of those TDs weren't on Simmons.
Players earn reps. Either Simmons earned 18 reps with his offseason or he earned 18 reps with his level of play in the game. Either way, he earned it and it isn't a viable excuse.

And again, I am not saying this is entirely his fault. I am saying that when you draft a dude and then don't play him in the role that got him drafted, you can expect him to be learning while others are producing.

Jeff Okudah didn't play and the rest are DLs except for CJ.
So.

Derrick Brown was a bull in the middle of the Auburn defense last year, the PAnthers drafted him to be that same thing, and he showed he can do that to a certain degree.

CJ Henderson was a man coverage player at Florida, the Jags drafted him, and then played him as a man coverage guy. He got a pick and made some nice plays.

Chase Young was a great college pass rusher...Redskins drafted him to be a NFL pass rusher, and he produced doing just that.

Simmons was a jack of all trades defensive player at Clemson with a defense designed around him. He played in a lot of different spots and did his best when he was free to read, react and use his athleticism to make players. I know someone on twitter says he was used that way, but I didn't see it watching the game and it looked like he was stuffed into a defined system. I will have to see which is accurate, but he rode the struggle bus all game regardless.

I hope he shows better next week. He is a smart, athletic and hard working guy from everything I know about him so I am not too worried that it is a problem with him. What I am worried about is that this organization has a history of putting high draft picks in positions to fail vs succeed.

They fooled him on that twice maybe 3 times. One time Jimmy G didn't see it the FB was uncovered for a TD.

Aside from the underthrows Jimmy at least 3 times had a guy uncovered either in the endzone or on his way to the endzone and didn't see him.

That one play it was the RB I think McKinnon and a couple of plays later he actually got the TD. The first time Chandler jones hit him and turned him loose to a safety who was not there.

I get he didn't have his Wr's but Jimmy was awful when they really needed him yesterday

Reddick had a PFF grade of 40 at his "natural" position. Turns out he just isn't good at football.

On the local postgame show they said the 2nd TD was on Banjo. On tv they said it's not where you are after the snap it's where you line up, Simmons was outside so McKinnon was his man. But on the postgame show they said the 49ers caught us with Banjo misaligned and ran a rub play where it was impossible for Simmons to get outside and Banjo was too far inside. I don't know if that's true or not but if you watch the replay Banjo is worrying about aligning other players and then it's like the light goes on in his head oh crap I need to get outside and he couldn't.

Simmons took the inside guy he clearly thought Banjo was outside.

Yes... to the confusion, that started with DRE rushing off the field, which I didn't understand.

If we act fast before other teams all get a chance to review the tape, we might be able to pick up a quick #2 or #3 2021 draft pick for him. Dallas just lost their MLB for half the season. Maybe we should be calling them.

So don't cite him in your examples when he didn't play a snap this past week to prove your point.

hard to play fast when you are learning
That kid will be a super star trust me. He probably hasn't stopped breaking down his film since the game ended. He's a sponge on assignments. The long TD he gave up would've never happened had he took his eyes off the QB & stayed with his man. He watched the QB too long. He'll learn. I bet money on him looking totally different against Washington next Sunday. Hard to show your speed & play fast until you learn the defense. It will come.

Campbell played so well its going to be hard for Simmons to earn reps at ILB..which is the way the NFL works.

If Thompson is going to be out...what about putting Simmons at FS and just letting him fly around back there? He is fast enough to play CF.

PFF grades are meaningless. Not defending Reddick, who I didn’t see as a problem yesterday, just using PFF in general to rate any player.

I think that type of personality is what should ease peoples concerns. I have heard very similar things about Simmons which is one reason I was ok with the team drafting him.

It doesn't look like Simmons will be playing much ILB if the first game and camp rumors are to be believed.

Unprecedented off season, Zoom training camp for the most part, rookie, etc., etc.

Too early to fret about it. He will settle in and be fine.

I remember being at a Ravens game in the early 2000's, when their first-round rookie safety picked off a pass and ran it back for what should've been a TD - but he started hot dogging and holding the ball out around the 10, got caught from behind and stripped of the ball at the 1. I was certain that anyone who would make such a bone-head play as that would never amount to anything and should be cut immediately! Dunno what ever became of that guy, i think he wore #20....
