No trade. No release. Play or sit.

Would Kobe go play in another league for a year? Could Kobe play in another league for a year?

He can't pull an Alonzo or Jim Jackson. New rules now that if he doesn't report, he'll be suspended, and they will suspend his contract so not only does he not get paid he also ends up not getting any closer to "freedom".

I guess he could go play in Italy, but I'm sure the $$$$$$$$$$$$ will convince him otherwise.

Or play and take full court shots!

Okay, this idea probably has no merit but you got me thinking.

Seriously, I've been thinking about Dan Majerle doing these trick shots at half court. If Majerle could shoot 40% at half court might there be a spot on the roster for a situational player at the end of close games to shoot from near mid-court. I know Majerle probably cannot play defense anymore but might he help spread the floor when a team has the opportunity to take the last shot.

Sorry, but it's been a long day.

If Kobe intentionally did not play well or whatever, I think he would kill his endorsements as well as his trade value if he ever did want out of LA. So I think he has to grin and bear it if the Lakers call his bluff.

Technically there is nothing Kobe can do for another 2 years. If the Lakers say "we're not trading you" Kobe has no other choice but to play for them unless he wants to give all those millions for no showing as already mentioned.

What he could do is try to force the team into wanting to move him by becoming a team cancer i.e. half assing games/practices, bad mouthing the organization, not performing/appearing at non basketball related team events.

Come on. Nobody is being serious about tanking. The real problem is that he'd just ignore his teammates and go for 50 points every night.

Yes and ESPN would be pushing him for MVP.

Yes but it's not likely since the other team would just guard the inbounds pass. I like the percentages of letting Majerle shoot the ball from the half-court area better. He could at least be a decoy.

It must be the heat today and trade rumors effecting those fans who live in Phoenix. :)

I don't think the Lakers could. I mean if Kobe refused to show up for games and practices the media attention would swell and swell until Kobe gets his way. I think there is no scenario in which the Lakers could win if Kobe really wants out of L.A.

Which I think in turn would be worse for LA. I think they would have less bargaining power in that situation versus them trading him right now.

When I was a kid (about 10yo), a friend was furious with the way our team play and a comment the coach made. He took the ball and made a shot... in our own basket...
With all the skills he has Kobe could do that with much more efficiency :)

Interesting article from NJ about how they almost drafted Kobe:

http://www.northjersey.com/page.php...lRUV5eTcxNTYwMjAmeXJpcnk3ZjcxN2Y3dnFlZUVFeXk2

Here's an excerpt:

So we return to the heart-stopping, mind-bending hours leading up to the '96 draft. The Nets had worked out Bryant three times, and fell madly in love all three times. Calipari and Nets general manager John Nash dined with Kobe's parents, Joe and Pam, the night before some lucky NBA team would hire the Bryants' high school wonderchild. Joe and Pam told the Nets' officials they wanted Kobe in the Meadowlands, close to their suburban Philly home.

Calipari and Nash agreed: They would select Kobe with the eighth pick.

The following day, Bryant's agent, Arn Tellem, informed Nash his client would play in Italy -- where Kobe spent some formative years watching his father play pro ball -- if the Nets dared to draft him. The GM knew Tellem must've had a deal in place. Nash knew that Jerry West, then in L.A., thought Bryant was about as good a young prospect as he'd ever seen.

As it turned out, Tellem and Adidas' Sonny Vaccaro had cooked up a plan to get Bryant to the Lakers via Charlotte, which was holding the 13th pick. The agent and the sneaker rep knew Kobe would slip to 13 if the Nets took a pass, and they knew the Los Angeles market would present a zillion more marketing opportunities than the East Rutherford market.

Vaccaro gave Kobe's father a job, and he had Tellem give the Nets a song and a dance. Nash wanted to call the bluff, but Calipari was afraid his first move could end up a Same Old Nets disaster. The coach took the safest available option. He went with Kerry Kittles of Villanova and Charlotte took Bryant and traded him to the Lakers for Vlade Divac.

"I get sick every time I think about it," Nash once told me.

At the '98 All-Star game, where Bryant drew the ire of David Robinson and others by throwing a wraparound pass to himself, Kobe claimed he had no pre-draft issues with the Nets. "Jersey would've been fine with me," he said. "Close to home, family and friends coming to the game. No problem."

It was a lie. Just like the lie Kobe tells now, the one where he had nothing to do with running Shaquille O'Neal out of town.

Truth is, Kobe Bryant deserves this vile mess of his. He won three titles with O'Neal, but decided he'd rather be a solo Hollywood act. He wanted to be Cher, not Sonny, and Mitch Kupchak went ahead and dealt O'Neal to Miami without getting the Heat's best player in return.

Brilliant. Bryant was happy for a bit, at least when he wasn't being dragged into a Colorado courtroom, and then reality zapped him like a blind pick. His Lakers weren't very good. He could score 81 points in a regular-season game, but that wouldn't help him a lick in a best-of-seven with the Suns

It was from the guy who Simmons had on his podcast (available for free through ESPN Page 2), who claims to be tight with Bryant. He said there was no chance that Bryant would suit up for the Lakers next season and that he'll sit if he's not traded.

From listening to most of the interview, I came to the conclusion that the guy was completely full of <banned> and was making things up on the spot to try to sound like an expert.

Also, Simmons has an amazingly dorky voice. I know it's not his fault, but my respect for him just took quite a hit.

Not that it's surprising or anything, but Paxson said no to a Kobe trade today.

And said he texted kobe about it.

What is it with KB and texting? He's like the text message poster child. Texted barkley for awhile.
