What is a meme?

I guess I don't know what a meme is. I cut and paste a snippet from an article, or a headline from an online news media source and that's a meme? Meanwhile I go to the meme threads and it is stuff that is made up. I am posting factual quotes, not made up media. Sometimes the quotes are literally what someone is quoted as saying and it is not factually disputed. It's just I posted it in the form of a picture instead of typing it all out because sometimes it is long. Some sites won't let you cut and paste from the articles.

I am typing challenged. So to me this is more of an ADA access thing to me. I also, just on this site only, have some spell check thing, that when I type it changes all my words. So cutting and pasting information is such a time saver. Everyone here has seen how my typing has typos that are challenging to the meaning of what I am trying to say. I know you guys say there's no spell check here. Literally I go to other boards and have no problem. I can also use programs without this difficulty also. For some reason this is the only site that there is a spell check that seemingly operates AFTER I hit the Post button. If you look at almost ALL of my posts they have to be edited.

So in short, in P&R don't post sensationalism pictures in the threads. If you go and look at each thread there, you'll see that they are not cluttered up with pictures. Yes, there are twitter, threads, and bluesky links, but there ARE NO PICTURES IN THE THREADS EXCEPT FOR THE CARTOON AND MEME THREADS.

Where is the political thread that allows BOTH pictures and text? There's pictures that occur politically that ARE the story in and of themselves? Where do we get to have those discussions?

Finally, I am typing diffident as I pointed out before. If I can't copy and paste, I can't communicate. So that eliminates me from the P&R discussions. I am essentially banned. I don't understand why you have the rules you have, but other moderators in other threads, like the Suns threads, I am allowed to cut and paste picture with stats, players shooting shots, etc., with no problems. The only time I have a problem is in threads you moderate. Life's not fair. But I thought I owed you an explanation of my viewpoint.

You are allowed to cut and paste but if the picture is of someone screaming, taunting, making fun of, or otherwise in bad taste, that's not allowed.. And that is exactly what you posted twice and what were deleted. Mind you, the words were not deleted only the pictures so I have no idea why this is an issue.

Pictures are not outright banned. If it's a straight up picture or screen capture that's relevant to the post. See this post as an example. Throw that over a funny image and it's most likely a meme. It all has to do with the composition of multiple pieces of media.

We have these rules in place for a reason too. It was not arbitrary. They came to be after some posters weaponizing them. It's not going to be changing.

Pictures are not outright banned. If it's a straight up picture or screen capture that's relevant to the post. See this post as an example. Throw that over a funny image and it's most likely a meme. It all has to do with the composition of multiple pieces of media.

Your example is LITERALLY what I have had deleted before. A post from a tweet with no pictures, just text like that. Usually a statistic, like 20% of new cars are EVS, etc etc.

This is what I am arguing. Sometimes the source cannot be highlighted and copied. It's literally on a picture. I quote if I can. In PR if you quote, then people ask what is the source. Sometimes the picture has the source in it and it saves som much hassle just being able to cut it and drop it in. If I have to retype of a picture long sentences and paragraphs that are relevant to the current conversation, for get it.

I have no clue what was in the deleted post that you're referring to so I can't comment on that particular one. What was said in it might have made it deemed one. Like this post by Carr is only text but it's a meme and he posted it in memes.

P&R has a different set of rules from the rest of the site. Memes are pretty much allowed in all forums except for P&R where they have been banned outside of their designated threads in P&R due to past issues.

That's fine too. It's just in P&R that we discourage posting pictures that make fun of something or sensationalize something in actual threads. Now there might be some confusion because somebody might post an actual link from Twitter or something like that where there is something offensive and it seems we have let those slide. So in essence if we can see who the original author is and can link it back to them more often than not that will be allowed.

I know the recent one was probably bad if it had a face on it. But I have had several that are like the Suns post and that's why I am confused as to what a meme is. All the ones I have had deleted I was told because they are memes. I thought memes were like what is in the P&R memes thread. I am still confused as to why we can post memes in one thread but cannot talk about them. Then talk about stuff without letting memes in it. But you can't have both memes AND text together? It's like keeping peanut butter away from jelly. I don't get it?

It stems from years and years ago memes and cartoons were not in one designated thread and they overwhelmed that forum. And then when we started to designate the thread the discussion got even more out of hand than it normally is. And this was 10 years ago. So we kept that in place where there is a special place for those and try to keep cartoons, memes, and similar pictures out of threads because they derail really quickly.
