What is fair for J.D Martinez’s next contract? Some one suggest...

If we are to spend 210 Million I would rather go after another ace. He can't keep up what he did this year.

That is one opinion. The other, as I've been posting, is 'yes, he can'.

I maintain that the most important thing he gave the Suns was protection for Goldy in the batting order. Without that, does anyone think that Goldy would have put up the numbers he did?

There is no one else on the Suns roster who can fill that role. Lamb, who shriveled up the 2nd half of the past two seasons? Tomás, c'mon. We'll need to sign someone else to fill that role if we expect the D-backs to hold even (Wild Card), let alone improve in 2018.

So you throw it at Jake Arrieta instead? I think he's the best SP option.

Go with an OF of Pollock, Peralta, and Brito?

I haven't thought about who plays right. I'm just saying if we're going to pay out another 200 million plus deal I would want it to be another ace.

I'm stuck thinking about Greinke, Ace 2, Ray, Walker, Godley, and maybe even Miller pulling his head out.

That will win a lot of games. I think you can bring up a bat that plays outfield. IMO you have to buy pitching it's to hard to get in any fashion.

Also move Bradley to closer and Chafin set up in the 8th.

You can work me over on this I'm winging it. I just think it's money better spent and we don't have a lot to spend.

Don't forget we still have Tomas... :)

The over-arching strategy for such a heavy emphasis on pitching (by signing another "ace") would be to field the most defensively capable team you could and hope to win your games 1-0 instead of 7-6. The humidor is a variable here on offensive production at Chase, but would expect to reduce the overall effect.

So you'd field Brito over Tomas with an added ace and the humidor effect on the ball.

So what do you do with Tomas? Sit him, with occasional starts and DH on AL Road Trips?

Yeah, it's not like he'd never play, but you'd platoon him and PH against LHP and DH at AL parks.

It's probably how to milk the most value out of him anyways.

Robbie Ray finished seventh in the National League for Cy Young award. And you're looking for an Ace #2?. Only six pitchers in the league were voted higher than he.

Greinke finished fourth and some of us say that, overall, Robbie was better. Certainly during the post season.

You're right, Robbie is not #2. He's #1A, if not #1 as we look ahead. :)
Let's hope Ray stays healthy or he repeats his awesome peformance of this past season. I would bring in another SP in case the injury bug hits the diamondbacks.

That is true of any team. Injury bug did hit the Dbacks last year.

Miller won't be ready, IMHO in 2018. Corbin should be brought back.

Sherfy would be a good 7th/8th inning guy.

Even better IMO you need 3 to have a great team. You can number them 1 or 2. I agree Ray was great this year and could be an ace. I would still spend the money for another ace. Now at 3 I'm ready to spend the money for bats and D.

I will add that we just might need some of that money to keep Ray. When is he do?

ARZ is going to let Martinez walk, settle all arbitration cases and roll with what we got now. Hazen will only buy if we are contenders at the deadline but chances of repeating early 2017 season success without Martinez aren't as great as Lamb would have to go on another tear and Pollock would have to have a better start than last year, that's asking a lot. I also think that Bradley will be moved to closer and MAYBE ARZ looks to fill a bull pen spot or two and looks for a cheap C to fill out the lineup. Bleak off season outlook. Team is REALLY going to watch its pennies even with a billion dollar television deal.

Without JD I think they can trade Pollock now. Even though Lamb imploded down the stretch he's 26 and had the 8th highest OPS among 3B's. Maybe try to get him on a team friendly extension.

Lamp was undependable during the 2nd half of the past two seasons. We need a consistent power hitter (even a non-spectacular Matt Williams type) to be with Goldie in the lineup from Games 1-162. Pollock has nothing to do with that.

Melky Cabrera is a FA, a little on the older side but consistent production over the years, possible replacement in LF but can play all 3 OF spots.
