They might mean the same thing.

It could mean that if a player is eligible for the waiver wire they are technically waived. But if they are vets that are not eligible for the waiver they are technically cut.

But what does it mean when they are released?

Released means Cut or Waived.

Every player can be released but not every one is waived or cut.

i give this a shot.

maybe it is like fanasty football. if you are waived then you have the ranking system. where the worst team will get this player first if another team wants him off waivier. if you are released then, thiis means the player can sign with whomever he wants to. where as you are waived you will have to go to a crappy team.

I'm not positive on this, but I think players that are not yet eligible for FA (RFA's, EFA's, and first year players) are waived. They are then on the waiver wire and it goes via draft position as to who has first dibs.

I think when a player is released, it means he is at least a 4 year veteran that is now eligible to be a FA.

?

Veteran players are cut, while young players are waived.

When a veteran player is cut, then he's cut and able to sign with any team.

When a young players is cut, then he's not technically cut, but waived, because he goes on the waiver wire for a 48 hours periode. Any team can make a claim for that player, but has to be willing to pick up his current contract as well. The claim is made at the league office and if more teams are claiming a player then the worst team is awarded the player (just like the draft)
If nobody claims the player during the 48 hour peirode, the he's a 100% FA and is not garanteed his old contract.
