After early-week forecasts painted a gloomy weather picture for at least one day of the Masters this week at Augusta National Golf Club, AccuWeather as of Wednesday evening was calling for a slightly brighter outlook.
As for Thursday’s first round of the Masters? Clear sailing ahead.
AccuWeather was calling for a high of 75 for Thursday’s opening round of the Masters with only a 6 percent chance of rain, as per Wednesday evening's forecast. There likely will be increasing cloudiness throughout the day, and winds are forecast to be 7 mph out of the south with gusts up to 17 mph.
The forecast earlier in the week called for as high as a 71 percent of rain Friday, but as of Wednesday evening AccuWeather had backed away from that significantly. The forecasters now call for a 40 percent of rain Friday, most likely early in the day and again late in the day. The second round of the Masters likely will see significant winds, which are predicted to be around 15 mph out of the west with gusts as high as 38 mph – good luck picking a club on the par-3 12th, gentlemen, as that hole plays across Rae's Creek toward the southwest and is famous for tricky winds. Friday’s temperatures are expected to top out at 70 degrees.
Augusta National Golf Club also does its own weather forecasts, and as of Wednesday evening the club called for a 70 percent chance of rain starting late Thursday night. The club predicted a 60 percent chance of the rain extending until 8 a.m. Friday morning – umbrellas might be a good call for anyone wanting to watch honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson tee off at a scheduled 7:25 a.m. The club’s forecasted chance of rain then decreased until it’s a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. As with AccuWeather’s forecast, Augusta National expects Friday to be breezy and gusty.
For the players who make it through the cut and into the weekend, the weather should be ideal. As of Wednesday evening AccuWeather predicted a zero percent chance of rain for Saturday and Sunday in Augusta. Saturday should have a high of 65 degrees, and Sunday should reach 71 degrees, perfect weather for donning a green coat.
