What should we feel about Szczesny’s time at Barcelona – Anything can happen with him in goal
Right now, it can be argued that Barcelona fans are finding it hard to decide how they truly feel about Wojciech Szczesny.
The Polish goalkeeper has shown flashes of brilliance since his debut, but also moments of concern. The recent match against Celta Vigo captured this confusion perfectly.
Szczesny produced a performance that included both errors and stunning saves, all within the same 90 minutes.
This inconsistency is not unfamiliar to those who have followed Szczesny throughout his career. It is part of what makes him such a unique character between the posts.
In the clash against Celta, his early mistake allowed Borja Iglesias to score, a clear lapse in judgement that put Barcelona on the back foot.
It was the kind of error that could have easily rattled any goalkeeper. But Szczesny reacted with remarkable composure, proving that he has the mentality to recover quickly, even after setbacks.
Despite these moments that spark debate among the supporters, one person has never shown any doubt about the Polish shot-stopper, Hansi Flick.
The German manager has backed Szczesny fully, making it clear that he sees no competition for the number one position at the club.

The match against Celta was a summary of Szczesny’s time at Barcelona so far. In the 15th minute, a cross came into the box, and Szczesny misjudged his timing and positioning.
This led to an easy opportunity for Iglesias. For many goalkeepers, this kind of error so early in a match might destroy confidence. But Szczesny’s response was nothing short of impressive.
Later in the game, he delivered a stunning double save—first using his foot, and then reacting with lightning reflexes to tip away another dangerous shot. These moments reminded everyone watching why he is trusted by the coaching staff.
It also helped calm the crowd, many of whom are beginning to truly appreciate the experienced keeper’s ability to bounce back instantly from a mistake.
Though Iglesias went on to score a hat-trick, Szczesny could not be directly blamed for the other two goals. His defence offered little help on those occasions, and he still managed to produce a number of key interventions.

If there was any doubt left about Szczesny’s place in the squad, it was erased before kick-off when Deco, the club’s sporting director, confirmed that talks to extend the goalkeeper’s contract are well underway.
Furthermore, Flick is impressed with his ability to lead from the back, command the penalty area, and rise to the occasion during high-pressure moments, something that has made him a dressing room favourite.
Despite the occasional errors, his experience and calm demeanour have earned the trust of those around him.
Meanwhile, Barcelona fans, though divided at times, are beginning to warm to him. He may not be flawless, but there is something about Szczesny’s presence that is starting to grow on supporters.
His passion, his refusal to shy away from responsibility, and his flair for the spectacular have all made a strong impression during his short time at the club.
