NSN Play of the Week – Week Fourteen.
11/26/2000 - NSN Staff
The Pennsylvania State Football Playoffs are where we find this week’s installment of the play of the week.
The Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers faced the Altoona Mountain Lions in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Tournament. The Ramblers had run roughshod over their competition this season, going (11-0) and allowing no opponent within 28 points in any win. Altoona had faced Cathedral Prep in an Allegheny Conference game earlier in the season, and the Mountain Lions were defeated 46-10.
You want more proof of Erie Cathedral Prep’s dominance; The Ramblers were ranked as the top AAAA team in Pennsylvania and had risen to 6th overall in the nation. That said, Altoona came into Erie Veterans Stadium and gave the Ramblers all they could handle. Altoona took a 7-6 lead in the first half, and the score remained the same with two minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Mountain Lions had the ball at Prep’s 4-yard line and the Ramblers allowed Altoona quarterback Brian Camberg to score an uncontested touchdown to make the score 13-6. But Ryan Rose’s extra-point attempt was blocked by Cathedral Prep’s Jason Easter.
On the ensuing kickoff, Erie Cathedral Prep’s Tim Dance picked up the short Altoona kickoff and raced 85 yards for the game-tying touchdown.
Two exciting overtime periods would follow. Altoona scoring on their first possession when Camberg found pay dirt on a two yard run. Erie Cathedral was faced with a 4th and 3 after they got the ball, but quarterback Ed Hinkel hit wide receiver Josh Lustig with a scoring strike and the game was tied at 20-20.
Hinkel opened the second overtime with a 10-yard run and Erie Cathedral Prep led 27-20. The Ramblers defense stopped Altoona on it’s next possession and Erie Cathedral Prep had an exciting double overtime win and a spot in the PIAA Semi-Finals next week vs. Mt. Lebanon.
This thrilling finish was all made possible by the exciting 85-yard kickoff return by Tim Dance, and for that reason, the senior’s thrilling dance to the end zone is this week’s choice for the NSN Play of the Week.
