The Eagles ran a fake field goal against us at SDS.
A no look, over the shoulder flip by the punter to I believe David Akers. It was a back breaker. We were losing at the time, but it was still pretty close.

When I coached JV football in Ohio during a practice game one entire bank of lights on one side of the field went out. we kept on playing and just for fun I ran a reverse to the Dark Side.....only TD we scored all night.

That was classic. As horrifying as the reality of that play was, it was still funny.

The naked bootleg is one of my favorite plays. If I had Culpepper, Vick or Stewart I'd run it more than I should.

That wasn't a trick play, that was horrible defense. I think Bono ran that 76yds in 34 secs.

Marino's pretending he was going to spike the ball and then throwing a TD was pretty slick.

Of course, there was Buddy's Eagles taking a knee against the Cowboys, and then on the next play throwing a TD to run up the score. Classless, yes. But it sure did trick em.

98 yard triple reverse!

THE 98 yard triple reverse that tied the score at 68-68. This happened duriong the football game Homer Simpson watched while skipping church.

I know it is not real but it sounded great.

For people in the real world. Then Dan Marino's fake spike to beat the Jets.

How about the Titans play Wycheck passing to Dyson on the kickoff for the winning TD? Talk about timing.

I listened to that at work that weekend. The smattering of people that were in the office that day got an earfull of "Holy Chit!!! Did you see that?!" Even though I wasn't even watching.
Great stuff.

The single greatest play on the goal line, in my opinion. As long as your QB is somewhat mobile and really sells the fake hand-off, he can walk into the end zone.

I remember that play well. Koy Detmer was the holder.

But if I were going for one play, I'd say the Nebraska fumble-rooskie.

The best one I heard of was a couple of years ago in High School Playoffs - Pennsylvania. - On Defense no less!

My Old HS (Cathedral Prep) was in playoffs and they were an offensive juggernaut. I forget the team that they were playing, but there was less than a minute left to play and the other team was down by like 2 points and had the ball first and goal after a long play.

Cathedral Prep called a time out, on defense. After the time out, they lined up stacking the middle of the field. When the ball was snapped, no one on defense moved and the other team swept outside for a TD, uncontested and untouched. They felt that the other team's O would have either scored a FG & TD anyways so they tried to give their own offense as much time as they could.

The other team kicked off and Cathedral Prep drove down the length of the field with less than a minute to to score a winning TD with just seconds remaining.

Great call!

Didn't Green Bay essentially do something similar against Denver in the SuperBowl?

I think that's illegal now.

What a concept. Why just pull your guard? Hell, find a way to get him the rock!

NSN Play of the Week – Week Fourteen.
11/26/2000 - NSN Staff
The Pennsylvania State Football Playoffs are where we find this week’s installment of the play of the week.
The Erie Cathedral Prep Ramblers faced the Altoona Mountain Lions in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Tournament. The Ramblers had run roughshod over their competition this season, going (11-0) and allowing no opponent within 28 points in any win. Altoona had faced Cathedral Prep in an Allegheny Conference game earlier in the season, and the Mountain Lions were defeated 46-10.

You want more proof of Erie Cathedral Prep’s dominance; The Ramblers were ranked as the top AAAA team in Pennsylvania and had risen to 6th overall in the nation. That said, Altoona came into Erie Veterans Stadium and gave the Ramblers all they could handle. Altoona took a 7-6 lead in the first half, and the score remained the same with two minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Mountain Lions had the ball at Prep’s 4-yard line and the Ramblers allowed Altoona quarterback Brian Camberg to score an uncontested touchdown to make the score 13-6. But Ryan Rose’s extra-point attempt was blocked by Cathedral Prep’s Jason Easter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Erie Cathedral Prep’s Tim Dance picked up the short Altoona kickoff and raced 85 yards for the game-tying touchdown.

Two exciting overtime periods would follow. Altoona scoring on their first possession when Camberg found pay dirt on a two yard run. Erie Cathedral was faced with a 4th and 3 after they got the ball, but quarterback Ed Hinkel hit wide receiver Josh Lustig with a scoring strike and the game was tied at 20-20.

Hinkel opened the second overtime with a 10-yard run and Erie Cathedral Prep led 27-20. The Ramblers defense stopped Altoona on it’s next possession and Erie Cathedral Prep had an exciting double overtime win and a spot in the PIAA Semi-Finals next week vs. Mt. Lebanon.

This thrilling finish was all made possible by the exciting 85-yard kickoff return by Tim Dance, and for that reason, the senior’s thrilling dance to the end zone is this week’s choice for the NSN Play of the Week.

Agreed! The fumble-rooskie rocked!

I remember a game between the Oilers and Steelers in the Astrodome back around '81 (and I think it was a playoff game, but I may be wrong on that).

Bum Phillips had the intestinal-fortitude to call the fumble-rooskie on a 4th and short. The Oilers scored a TD on it, but I think they still lost the game. I remember my older-brother screaming "They can't do that! That's cheating!" :D

I was an Oiler fan. I was screaming "I can't believe they did that! That's brilliant!"

I think that was the game that Vernon Perry had 4 interceptions against Bradshw.

I loved the fumble-rooskie. The NFL needs to bring that back along with the drop-kick!

I always thought that a punter could be a hell of a weapon.

ASU had some kid from Australia a couple of years ago that was a former rugby player and was now a punter. Everytime he got the ball, he started to run and if someone came near him, he punted, if not, he tried to get the 1st down.

I know that the linemen can't release and the NFL defenders would kill the guy, but it would be fun to see nonetheless.

The "Fumble-rooskie" is a lot less common. It is basically a draw play for the center or the most athletic offensive lineman. The play starts off like a normal play. But when the quarterback yells "hike," instead of handing the ball off to the quarterback, the center puts the ball into the quarterback's hands (to make the snap legal), then pulls it back and puts it on the ground (or the quarterback may quickly put the ball on the ground himself). While the ball-handling specialists -- the quarterback, running backs and receivers -- run around as if they're making a play and the offensive linemen engage their defensive counterparts, the ball is picked up by an offensive lineman, who runs untouched the other way. The key to the play is for the entire team to sell the fake and continue to run a dummy play. This play, which is no longer legal, worked better in college than in the pros -- Tom Osborne's Nebraska team ran the play the best.

I'm sure someone needed that explaination of the dynamic of the play, but not me...that and a "tackle-eligible" were my only opportunities to score in a game. I had plenty of chances to score in practice, when the coaches would have me play "the big fat fullback" against the 1st team defense we were facing that week...
