We've had him on the bench in street clothes for a year.
He has had virtually no minutes under DAntoni.
We resign him mysteriously.
Steve Kerr says he is a very good player and will get an increased role.
He'll turn 32 this month.

What is it? Is there something to this guy none of us has seen? What will his role really be this year? Just curious on your thoughts.

He must have some really damaging blackmail stuff on Kerr. :D

I keep going through his record to see if there was something, anything, to suggest he could contribute this year. I can find nothing.

He did have a few good games with the Spurs on 2005-06, but very few and nothing extraordinary.

So I too am deeply puzzled because he'd be cheaper to hire as a coach than as a player who doen't dress for the games.

Kerr saying that he is a good player is just another way of spinning the Kurt Thomas trade.

He will have the same role as he did last year.

My question is, why not save the money they signed him to, and use that to help with the PJ Brown situation, then sign a scrub to the league miniumum?

Yes. Everything. We haven't seen him play at all.

I've said this before, but nobody seems to listen. When the Suns signed Sean Marks last offseason, Kerr wrote an article for Yahoo that said that he was a great bargain buy who would be a contributor to our rotation. Clearly, D'Antoni didn't give him much of a shot. Kerr played with him, knows him well, and seems positive that Marks can be a helpful member of this team. If he's right and can convince D'Antoni to give him minutes, I'll be a very happy man.

Marks IS a scrub who DID sign for the league min (we didn't sign him for more than that did we?).

We listen, but we're trying to find any corroborating evidence whatsoever that Marks can contribute. So far, all we have is that Kerr likes him. Since Kerr played with him, it carries a little weight, but Mark's history seems to indicate otherwise.

Do you have a link on that article?

uh, ford, not sure where you're getting this info. Marks never played with Kerr because Marks got to SA right before the 2004-5, a full season after Kerr retired, following the 2002-3 season. And I'm not sure how Kerr could have played with him or gotten to know him after he retired considering that the following season (2003-4) he immediately went into broadcasting, constantly jetting around the country.

I remember the article where Kerr said he could be a surprise, but he never played with Marks.

Ah. You're right. But they must have some kind of relationship, and Kerr strikes me as the kind of player who hangs out at team facilities after he has retired. Kerr must know something.

but how much time could he have done that while flying all over the country with TNT?

Kerr is a Spurs agent, in his heart if not literally. Seriously, what possible sense can it make to pay a GM to make trades that any 14-year-old could negotiate, after sniffing enough glue? Are you telling me that the Suns needed a "real" GM in order to give up only Thomas, Jones, and two first-round picks for nothing?

Not that I think Marks is any good, but there was a time when the general consensus that Marks was the greatest Aussie/Kiwi basketball player on the planet. That sounds great, but the greatest Aussie player is probably only marginally better than Luc Longley.

I believe Kerr when he says Sean Marks can play and will get some minutes this year. I was shocked that he barely played last year and couldn't believe he was behind Burke in the rotation. I have no idea how good he is, but it wouldn't surprise me if he ended up getting 5-10 minutes a game. JMO.

Marks was big star at the international level for New Zealand, but somehow never seemed able to translate his skills into NBA play. But on the plus side, he's a "young" 32. ;)

Count me as one of the people, maybe the only person, who thought that Sean Marks was a bargain last summer. I thought he would be able to come in and play a handful of minutes per game as that 9-10 off the bench. I thought he would be able to help one we were in foul trouble against a big team.

Of course I must have forgotten that Mike D'Antoni only has a 7-8 man rotation, even during the regular season. I also think it must have been Burke who had those incriminating photos of Mike D'Antoni.

Now I don't think Sean Marks is going to come in and make anybody forget about Kurt Thomas. I do think he can provide at least some thing off the bench if he gets the chance though.

Well, that's the hope. I don't know if I share your level of enthusiasm (however low that is), but I'm definitely not ready to write him completely off just yet.

You're not the only one. I've been pretty consistent with this as well. I have no idea how good he is, but I couldn't believe he got less minutes than Burke.
