The Florida Gators are heading to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017 after wins against Norfolk State and the defending champion UConn Huskies.

Now, the Gators have another tough task as they face the Maryland Terrapins, who are riding high off a game-winning shot against Colorado State that snuck them past the round of 32.

In USA TODAY Sports' updated reseeding heading into the Sweet 16, Florida basketball earned the No. 1 overall spot, ahead of the Duke Blue Devils and Houston Cougars. The Gators are now among the most talked-about teams remaining in the NCAA Tournament with their ability to show resilience and determination, as displayed in their round of 32 game against the Huskies.

As the Sweet 16 kicks off in a couple of days, Florida will face another major test in its quest for a Final Four appearance. But for now, the Gators are exactly where they want to be–on a roll, gaining national respect and at the top of USA TODAY Sports' Sweet 16 rankings.

This is everything USA TODAY Sports writer Eddie Timanus had to say about Florida.

What USA TODAY Sports said about the Gators

"Our expert (snort) bracket has the Gators winning the whole thing. We’ll stick to that, though they needed everything in the tank to get past two-time defending champ Connecticut in the second round. Now that they’ve made it to San Francisco, they match up favorably with the rest of the teams in the region."
