Which do you choose....Door #1; Door#2 or Door #3 ?

The way I think it's playing out, there appears to be three options that will likely end up on the Card's plate for Shelton. Which makes the mosr sense?

Door #1: Shelton straight up for Travis Henry?

Door #2: Shelton straight up for Patrick Surtain?

Door #3: Shelton for either TB's or Chicago's 2nd round pick?

We could sure use an additional pick (Door #3) but in the event that we trade Shelton for either Henry or Surtain it effectively gives us an extra pick in that we don't have to use our #8 on say PacMan Jones or our #44 on Barber/Morency or Fason.

Door #1 Henry is a rugged and tenacious RB with good hands. He is good in the locker room as teamates respect his work ethic. There is not too much wear and tear on him (fours years but he didn't play much last year). He has proven his mettle. The downside is that he is in the last year of his contract and will be a UFA in 2006 unless we can redo the contract before the trade.

Door #3 Surtain is in the prime of his career and has enough "juice" to last through a five year contract. He is Pro Bowl material each and every year. He would be the rock that we've been needing at CB ever since Starks caught the "injury flu". He would give the Card's that "playmaker" at CB. Along with Macklin, Starks and Hill we would be set in the defensive backfield.

Tough call to make........any opins?

Surtain is thebest player but I can't imagine miami trading him straight up for Shelton.

Henry is good but he's had a history of injuries going back to a severe neck injury in college, he's not a good pass blocker which is essential when we go to the 1 back set, and as you said last year of his contract. Might play harder to get a new one but you risk losing him if he can't come to terms.

CB is not a "need" position but if we can get Surtain for Shelton i'd do it in a heartbeat, I just don't believe LJ's market value is THAT high.

I believe you can never have too many good players, but considering how good our pass defense was last year I think that it's accurate to say CB isn't a need. We need a FS more than a CB but if you have a chance to get a Pro Bowl CB you go get him because he'll make your team better.

I'd love to have Surtain, Macklin and Starks with Hill as the 4th guy.

Would the rest of the team want Surtain here? I was under the impression that he was one of the guys who caused the 'scuffle' at Miami?

Surtain and Henry would both want a new deal when arriving and should be given one considering their contracts expire after next season.
Their trade value is very simular, Surtain is the the better player of the two , but the Dolphins are more pressured than unload him than the Bills with Henry, because of Surtain's high cap number.

So that makes the deal almost identical for us. Same price both tradewise and contractwise and both players fill a need.

That mekes the choice very easy IMO - Surtain is the best of the two so trade for him.

In fact I would prefer the Bucs #36 overall pick over Henry, because I don't think Henry fits the need for a speed RB that we have. Furthermore, the draft is extremely deep at RB (also deep at CB), so we could get a better fit with that pick. The question is with we're willing to gamble with the trade off between a better fit with a rookie and a proven player like Henry.

I like door #2 the best. Getting a probowl quality CB is almost as hard to get as a franchise QB. Adding Patrick Surtain to our defense would be great.
