I disagree
Our roster is not a championship roster; far from it. This year was supposed to be a step back toward respectability in a very week division. If we were in virtually any other division, respectability would still be far away.
We have two major problems: OL and OLB (particularly OLB). Yes, there are other nagging issues, but they can be covered up. We literally don't have OLBs on the roster in my view. How can you win without them in a 3-4 defense? You can't.
This year feels like a rewind to 2007 to me. We were a young team. We lost a tremendous amount of close games in new and creative ways, but muddled in mediocrity. This year, we easily could have won both the Seahawks and Giants games (if not Washington); at 3-2, we wouldn't have the complaints that we have. But the difference between bad, mediocre and good teams is not significant in the NFL.
Kolb has all of the tools except confidence and experience. He doesn't know the system; it's complicated, and he has no confidence. If you watch the past 3 games, he is hesitating on even the short throws and is rushing others. The game has not slowed down for him. I don't fault him for it, and I'm sure he'll pull through in time.
We are not a mentally tough team, and we never really have been other than the playoff run to the SB. So the team rises and falls with good breaks and momentum. We've been steadily improving (if not slowly) on defense. But the team lives and dies on the offensive side of the ball. We just aren't there yet, and my guess is that we won't be until the last quarter of the year.
I view this as a rebuilding year. My goal is the SB; I really don't care about the respect we do or don't get. We are still rebuilding and will be for another 1-2 years. I trust Whiz to get us back there, but admit that it is incredibly frustrating along the way.
