after listening to Steve Kiem's interview, i got a very bad feeling. He says they have a checklist that includes plays smart, plays physical, and plays hard. Listening to that, one guy kept popping into my head- James Laurinitis. He has all those qualities along with impeccable character and work ethic. My problem is that i don't think he's going to be all that great. I don't know how he would transition but i could see him in Chike's role. He's very good in coverage for a LB, a solid tackler, and a servicable pass rusher. But that was all at the college level. I just think he struggles at the NFL level. But either way, i can see him being the pick at 31. Don't think i'd be very happy either.

He also plays ILB, which is not seemingly our top priority.

Hey, CBUS...

I hear ya' but I think everything will be just fine. As fans, on the out-side looking in, our vision is really limited. BUT we can see results on the field. After last years' draft this group has earned my trust. GO CARDS!!

Hey, Cbus...

Chill dude. Laurinitis won't be drafted by us. Makes no sense, at least to me. None. No sense to Urban or Somers or anybody else.

No worries that could also describe Larry English!

That's everyone's type of player - except maybe the Bengals.

It makes perfect sense to me. Talks with Dansby have not come to fruition and he talks like he wants a a shot at free agency. Our number 1 backup in the middle, Monty Beisel, signed with the Chiefs.

Next year we could be left one player short at ILB.

One injury and we could be short this year too.

It surprised us last year with the drafting of two defensive ends when there wasn't really a hole to fill. And the team drafted Doucet in the third round when we seemed to have a stable of receivers.

If this FO has done anything it has tried to look ahead and see if there will be an unfilled spot in the future.

They drafted the defensive ends to replace Smith who they felt they wouldn't be able to, or not want to resign.

If we look at it logically they probably drafted Doucet to fill Boldins role. We don't know if there was a rift between Boldin and the front office at draft time last year, but looking back at it they may have known about something that we were unaware of.

They have planned ahead and protected their interests when ever they have had the chance.

Drafting Laurinitis would just be following a well established pattern and it might just be smart maneuvering on the part of the FO.

Giants beat reporter who supposedly has a pulse on the team has said he thinks the Giants are leaning in the Lauranitis direction to take over for Pierce.

1. If we're drafting according to a modified BPA approach, it doesn't matter whether or not ILB is not a top priority.

2. Come to think of it, who says ILB isn't considered a top prioirity by the Cardinal front office? The beat writers? The national media? (You never know how our coaches view roster positions in terms of depth, contract situations etc. etc. For example, what happens if we can't sign Dansby and he gets to walk in a non-cap 2010? We'd better have at least one backup ILB ready to move up. Right now that would probably be either Haggans or Ali Highsmith (who's a bit light to play inside).

3. Cards were said to entertain an early visit by Maualuga - why would they do so unless they felt that - regardless of position - Maualuga could help them? (If the Cards rate Laurinaitis anywhere near Maualuga on their board, I could see Laurinaitis under consideration at #31).

4. I definitely think Laurinaitis could be in the Cardinal Top 31; however, we're not the only team who places a high priority on physicality, smarts and toughness. (for example teams coached by Belicheck or his alumni - New England, KC, Cleveland). Which is why I have NE grabbing Laurinaitis at #23. You never know about how the draft will turn out - maybe there will be a surprise and Laurinaitis will still be there. I have him rated #16 on my board - and list him behind Moreno, Matthews, Wood and Mack in terms of players I like who might fall to us by #31.

I think he would be in the Cards top 31. The crazy thing about this draft is that we have no clue who the Cards are going to take. We can speculate all we want but it's all going to come down to what the 30 teams in front of us do.

True, bg7. If the Cardinals wind up with two 1st rounders, Laurinaitis as the second of those picks would not be a surprise, esepcially with Dansby on his way out the door.

I agree.

And I think he's looking for players who, quite simply, have their head on straight.

(Oh, Lordy, I know some of you guys are going to have fun with that one.)
