As I was enjoying Southern hospitality and being a patron at that little course in Georgia, you know what message was sent to me via text, email and direct message the most?

What happened to the win-loss standings on the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s website?

Listen, the only way the RIIL’s website would win a beauty contest would be in a game of Monopoly. But what it lacked in aesthetics, it made up for in functionality. Everything was a click away and wasn’t difficult to find.

The RPI changed that.

With the RIIL using RPI instead of wins and losses to determine playoff seeding – a decision that remains No. 1 on the most overthought and unnecessary things in the history of RI high school sports, as seen by this little lawsuit – it made the tradition win-loss standings page completely irrelevant.

The RIIL did everyone a favor in the fall and kept the page active on its website. While there was an RPI tab, the large majority of people used traditional standings to figure out how things worked. It was the same story in the winter season.

Things have since changed. The RIIL’s traditional win-loss standings are no longer being updated by their website provider, which has caused panic by those looking to find out how teams are doing – present company included.

If you are one of the panicked, I have a solution.

My dumb brain remembered I was using the RPI Standings at the end of basketball season. While it might seem scary and confusion, trust me – it’s not.

So how do you navigate the RIIL’s standing pages now?

Go to the website. Pick you sport, then click the giant blue “standings” button or the RPI Standings in the left tab. That’s the easy part.

When you see the standings, it provides information that’s unnecessary. There’s no explanation for what any of the letters or numbers mean, so here’s my advice – don’t worry about it.

The columns on the right tell you who teams have won and lost against and what teams are coming up on the schedule, but it’s presented in a way that makes me want to throw my laptop across a room. Ignore this stuff too.

There is a simple solution to all of this. When you’re on the RPI Standings page, just click the name of the team whose information you’re after. Once you do, it brings up everything you need to know – when and where it was played, what the score was, and whether or not it’s considered a league game or non-league, plus the future schedule.

Not every game is updated, but that’s on coaches not doing their jobs in a timely fashion. You can cross reference missing games on MaxPreps, provided you love pop-up ads and videos that play at an absurd volume.

Do I like this change? I’m a Rhode Islander, so of course not. Is this change good? No, but only because RPI is inherently stupid and unnecessary for a state this small.

Is the website functional and the information easy to find? Yes.

And that’s what matters, at least for this column.

Now let’s get on to the rankings.

1. La Salle (6-0)

The absolute worst thing that could have happened for the rest of the state was the Rams having to grind out a tough win over Smithfield in their season opener. Since then La Salle has just Hulk smashed everyone it’s played and don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. The Rams have three home games this week against Cranston West Wednesday, Cumberland Thursday and some out-of-state team called Cheshire on Friday.

2. Chariho (4-1)

Getting a statement win in the second week isn’t a bad way to jump-start a season. With Adriana Jeannenot throwing gas, the Chargers buried Coventry on Friday and stuck their flag in the ground as the prohibitive favorite to reach RIC. Chariho has a heck of a week coming up, playing at Pilgrim Monday, hosting the Patriots on Thursday and then traveling to play Cranston West on Friday. Two wins would be huge. Three would be monumental.

3. Pilgrim (5-0)

Nothing is going to be easy for the Patriots this spring and the first two weeks of the season have proven as much. Pilgrim is undefeated, but last week’s wins over Ponaganset, Moses Brown and Toll Gate – those last two being by one run – show there’s a lot of work still to be done. The Patriots have a great test this week with games against Chariho (home Monday, road Thursday) sandwiching a game against D-II favorite West Warwick. Can Pilgrim continue to scrap up wins?

4. Cranston West (3-0)

The Falcons found their footing in the first two weeks of the season and put up football numbers in their three wins, but expect those run totals to slow down this week. By this time next week, Cranston West will know exactly how it stands. The Falcons travel to play Coventry Monday and La Salle Wednesday, host Chariho Friday and Cumberland on Saturday. Going .500 would be huge.

5. Smithfield (3-1)

The Sentinels didn’t win their season opener, but the confidence gained from their 3-1 loss to La Salle was apparent in their next three games. Now, Smithfield needs to build on it. The Sentinels have one game during spring vacation, traveling to play a slow-starting Prout team on Monday. Playing well and building confidence is Smithfield’s priority, but if that comes with a dub this team will continue to get scarier for the rest of the state.

ON THE BUBBLE: Coventry (1-1)

1. Johnston (1-0)

The Panthers showed their strengths and weaknesses in their season-opening win over BNS. Haley Boudreau dominated in the circle, the bats showed pop and the defense was far from perfect. Good news is its April and there’s plenty of time to work on that last part. Johnston has three games this week, playing at Woonsocket Tuesday before a doubleheader against North Providence at Notte Park on Thursday.

2. St. Raphael (2-0)

Just how good are the Saints? It's tough to tell with just two games under their belt, but the Week 1 win over East Greenwich was certainly an announcement they're here to contend. After beating Woonsocket last week, St. Raphael will be more than ready for this week's two-game slate - hosting Portsmouth on Wednesday and state contender Coventry on Friday. The D-II schedule gets real tough the following week, but two good performances will go a long way this early in the season.

3. West Warwick (2-1)

The Wizards’ only loss came to a D-I opponent – which just happened to be the same team that ended their season last spring. There aren’t many teams that are going quiet this lineup the way Westerly did, so West Warwick should learn from it and realize there are going to be games it needs to grind tougher. The Wizards have a couple of good tests this week, traveling to play North Providence Tuesday and perennial state power Pilgrim on Wednesday.

4. East Greenwich (3-2)

Want to see what good scheduling looks like? The wildly inexperienced Avengers opened their regular season with a non-league loss to D-I Prout, then lost to St. Raphael in their D-II opener. That big-game experience clearly helped, as EG rolled out commanding wins over Woonsocket, Burrillville and D-III favorite Narragansett last week. The Avengers will look to build on that confidence with a game against Lincoln at Rhode Island College on Tuesday morning.

5. Toll Gate (3-3)

Here’s another team that understands how to schedule in the RPI era. The Titans lost to D-I Chariho and Ponaganset to start the year, beat Barrington in their D-II opener, followed it with a win over D-III Exeter-West Greenwich before getting a win over South Kingstown. Last Friday Toll Gate put a scare into Pilgrim in a loss that proves this team can contend with anyone. The Titans will try and prove as much this week with a game at Westerly Tuesday and at Mt. Hope Thursday.

ON THE BUBBLE: Barrington (4-1)

1. Tiverton (6-0)

While the opponents aren’t quite world beaters, the Tigers have still managed to make a statement in their first six games of the season. Tiverton’s trouncing teams left and right, from Division II to D-III to out-of-state, and is setting itself up for quite the spring. The first true test of 2025 comes Tuesday when it hosts Davies and while it shouldn’t struggle with Paul Cuffee on Wednesday, a good performance will be necessary to keep momentum going forward with defending champ Cranston East looming.

2. Cranston East (2-1)

For the first time since their season-ending defeat in the 2023 D-III losers’ bracket final, the Thunderbolts have lost a game. After opening the year with a win over Rogers, Cranston East got dropped by D-II Barrington, but the team showed its resolved with last week’s win over Classical. With three games on the schedule this week – home against Central Monday and Middletown Wednesday, at Pawtucket Saturday – the Thunderbolts will continue to move forward.

3. Davies (3-2)

Apparently the Patriots only lose in March because after an 0-2 start, they’re 3-0 in April following last week’s win over Central Falls. Davies thinks it has something an Tuesday, it will find out if it’s a bona fide contender when it travels to take on Tiverton with a game at Shea on Wednesday. Two wins would go a long way as it builds momentum with heading into its game against defending champ Cranston East next week.

4. Narragansett (2-3)

The Mariners found out quick that the D-III title wasn’t just going to be handed over. Gansett lost to Davies in its season opener, but after a loss to D-II South Kingstown, cruised to two wins to get the season going in the right direction. Last week’s loss to D-II East Greenwich was another good test where the result didn’t matter as much as the experience. Taking a week off could prove to be detrimental later in the season, but Narragansett will get some rest before returning to the field on April 21.

5. Central (5-1)

We told you in the preseason the Knights were going to put up runs and that’s exactly what they’ve done. After beating up on the bottom half of D-III, Central will now get a barometer for just how good it is when it travels to play Cranston East on Monday before hosing Rogers Wednesday. If the bats show up like they did in the first two weeks, the Knights will be in business.

ON THE BUBBLE: Middletown
